So I just got a dog. Took it to the vet and got it checked out. He's two months (or so) and in good health. He has worms though. Dr gave him first rabbies shot and some oral med for deworming. She sadi not to give him any over the counter dewormers.
Now there are worms (tiny) falling outta my dogs butt, do I take him back to the vet??? What the heck!!!

Here's the deal: Most people confuse tapeworm segments (or egg sacs) with other intestinal parasites. Broad-spectrum dewormers that puppies receive routinely by your veterinarian will not kill tapeworms (most don't). You need to call your veterinarian (it's NOT an emergency by any means) and tell them exactly what you said here. They will give you a medication (usually a single pill) that will kill the adult tapeworm(s) that are shedding those segments you see.

It's not a big deal so don't panic.

You will also probably want to ask about getting a flea-control product that is safe for puppies. Fleas are the most common intermediate host for tapeworms so you will want to eliminate them as well.

these are tapeworms. go back in about 1 - 2 days to get your dog re wormed. they should have given you a couple of other dewormers. worms dont ALL die in just one dose. call them tomorrow and see what they say. this is VERY tipical when a dog is given wormer. i know its really gross, but just call the vet tomorrow if they are still alive in the stool and ask for another worming. Hope this helped! Email/message me if you have any more questions. :D

o yeah, and take the vets advice do not under any circumstances get a dewormer @ a convient store.

Those little worms are babies, sent off the big worm in your dog. They are trying to find hosts of their own. Try to dispose of them without touching them with your hands. If your dog was given dewormer, he should be pooping pretty good soon, which should include the big worm. Worms are amazing at getting in dogs. A lot of puppies are born with worms or get them very young - it doesn't say anything about your dog or his breeder. Oh yes - if this is a a new thing, go to the vet. It's possible your dog was treated for a different kind of worm. The one with the little worms coming out is tapeworm. Ask your vet what the wormer was for.

Your dog just got a wormer. Your dog is passing the worms. It's normal unless the worms aren't dead or dying, in which case you need to take the dog back to the vet to have the worms identified for a more appropriate treatment.

Edit: Since you added that the worms are still alive, my question would be whether your vet analyzed a stool sample to identify the dog's specific type of infestation and prescribe the right wormer. If not, you probably need to find a competent vet.

I wish your vet had given you directions as to when to bring the dog back to find out if the worms are gone. If the worms are still there the dog will have a big stomach. Take him back immediately to the doctor and get furthur information as to what to do.
Worms eat everything in his stomach so he is really starving.
Take him the minute you get a chance. They, the dogs are
really worth it.love your little bady and take very good care of your little blessing,
May God be with you.

Are they about 1/4 inch or so and white and move kindof like a flat inchworm?? If so they are tapeworms. It's okay.... just call the vet tomorrow and make sure the wormer he gave him included tapeworm meds too. Tapeworms need a different kind of wormer, but usually, but not always the vet wormer includes this.
Thanks for asking!! I like responsible pet owners!!

And grocery store type products are usually more harmful than helpful. Stick to your vet or a feed store or vet supply places for pet products. :)

It;s a tapeworm if they are in tiny segments. Tapeworms require a specific wormer called droncit because tapeworms usually do not respond to regular de-wormer.
