The "x" represents the cross of Saint Andrew. People used to sign an "x" on an document to prove that they were not lying, and then they would kiss the cross to show their sincerity. This is where the custom of illiterate people signing with an "x" came from, and this is why the "x" represents kisses.
The "o" came latter, as people wanted apparently something to represent hugs as well, and the "o" probably looked like two arms holding someone.

All i comprehend is that the X is meant to resemble lips giving a kiss, and the O an embody... you placed your hands around a man or woman... comparable to an O... lol. i think of that is cute. From wiki: using XOXO is going lower back to using an X or go, which became into seen as stable as a sworn oath in cases before maximum folk would desire to write and consequently used the X in the comparable way a signature is used right this moment — a mark of one's word. An X on the tip of a letter or document became into usually kissed as a seal of honesty, in a lot the comparable way possible kiss a Bible or kiss the hands after making the sign of the Christian go. consequently the X got here to signify a kiss in cutting-part cases.

If you look at the shape of the letters, it will make sense. The "0"s are the hugs: an O looks like 2 sets of arms meeting (imagine it split in half). The "X"s are kisses: again, split it in half and you can see the shape of 2 sets of lips meeting in the middle.

X's are kisses because I guess your lips kind of look like that when you put them together to kiss (kind of a stretch).
O's are hugs because your arms look like that when you hug someone.
