In the Catholic faith, Godparents stand in at the baptism and speak for the baby when he/she is asked if he/she refuses Satan and sin. Then it is up to the Godparents with the parents to raise the child in the faith to make sure they live up to the commitment that was made when they were baptized. Also, godparents are, in some cases, considered the ones that will take care of the child if the parents cannot. It is considered a high honour for most people, esp. Catholics. The downside of converting to Catholicism as an adult is I never got Godparents.

Godparents are suppose to be a good role model for the child and show then right from wrong! There's also suppose to be like a mother or father for the child just in case the parents aren't around! The god child's parents also have a special part they have to choose a good and loyal person who they can trust with there child and know that in an emergency they can count on there godchild's godparents to help! You don't want your child to have stuck up godparents who are mean and stingy with the child! There's also suppose to set a good example for the child as well!

It really depends. I've known God-parents who take care of finances in the event the parents die. I've known God-parents who get full custody of the child in the event the parents die. Most of all, the God-parents are just there to support the child and the parents. If you have been asked to be a God-parent why not just ask the parents for their expectations.

God-parents are obviously a religiously-based tradition. They were the people who made a committment to God to undertake the child's religious upbringing, should something happen to the parents. But today, I think that less religious people ask someone to be a god-parent in order to bestow that honor on a person who is important to them, and whom they hope will be important to their child. But aside from the religious aspects, they usually just act like Aunties or Uncles and spoil the child and be nice to them and spend time with them.

This varies with different faiths and families. The usual duty of a godparent is to be a religious example to the child and make sure that he/she follows his faith, if the parents should be out of the picture, or if they do not keep the faith as they should.

In customary practice, a godparent remembers the child on birthdays and holidays, especially the baptismal anniversaries and the sacramental days.

The role of the God parent is to guide the children spiritully if something happens to the parent. Many people think that it means that they have to raise the child if something happens to the parent and that just isnt the case.
