I know it is some sort of cold parfait-like drink, but can someone please tell me exactly what it is? Thanks!

Here in Massachusetts a milk shake was only milk and syrup (usually coffee)and blended. We seem to have recently caught up with the rest of the world (aka McD's) and it now has ice cream in it. A frappe was make with ice cream, milk, and syrup, and a malt had malt powder added to a frappe. It's a New England thing. That's my drive-in history lesson of the day.

It's like a milkshake, only thicker than a shake.....lots more ice cream and little, if any, milk. It's an east coast term. You won't hear it mentioned as a frappe in the west.

a frappe is milk and ice cream no syrup. a milkshake is ice cream milk and syrup. a malt is usually just milk syrup and a spoon of malt powder but it often has ice cream as well. nothing to do with French or shaved ice.
