How destructive do you want to get and how thick are the walls? The studs are usually 16 inches on center apart. This means the center of a one inch stud is 16 inches away from the center of the next. Have you found one by accident yet? Keep measuring out 16 from there on that wall.
Stud finders work great, but it depends. We have plaster walls that we didn't tear down, we sheet-rocked right over them and finding a stud can be a little iffy since they're so thick now. You can tell when you hit a stud by the sound and how hard it is to drive the nail or the screw. The lathe is bouncy feeling and the plaster or wall board is empty. You need a little more muscle when you hit a stud. Once you find one, you'll be able to feel it. It's unmistakable.

Often the studs are 16 inches on center- from the center of one stud to the next. There should be a stud at the corner of the room. Measure out 16 inches and knock on the wall. The sound will be less hollow where the studs are located. Keep measuring out at 16 inch intervals and see if you can hear the stud. Of course you can also purchase a stud finder at a hardware store. You can also use toggle bolts to attach heavy items to a wall when there are no studs. They grip the drywall from behind, giving adequate support for shelves and mirrors.

A stud finder is the best way. Many also help find wires and plumbing behind the wall board before you damage it with a nail or drill. Any other way is hit or miss. You can purchase them pretty cheaply (some under $20) and you will have it forever to use again.

There's a tool called a stud finder and if you want to do it the old fashioned way knock on the wall and wait for the sound difference or you can just get some anchors for the drywall they are like these plastic things that go over the screw and it allows for heavy objects to be hung in drywall.
