Because Hearns spiffed Manos De Piedra with a perfect one-punch finish.

Duran was good at getting guys to fight & not box. He & Hagler stood toe to toe & exchanged punches. When he fought Hearns, Hearns kept him on the end of his jab remember Hearns was about 6 feet 1 inches & Duran was around 5 feet 9. Hearns has long arms & when he puts his mind to it & boxes & lets the KO come he was almost unstoppable. Also Duran never hit Hearns clean because Hearns didn't have the best chin. You have to get Hearns to exchange & not box then you can beat him if you can take his shots. See Hagler never got hurt & since Hearns couldn't hurt him & wouldn't box then he was eventually going to get hit. Hearns was the only boxer during Durans prime that KO'd him!!!

Hearns was a outside fighter with power. Leonard popped Duran with some good punches in their first fight and wobbled Duran, so what did Hearns do? Laced him all over the floor. Hagler fights like Duran and he likes that style. Note: thats how he beat Barkley, because Barkley fights like that but Barkley is no Hagler. Duran showed us in the second Leonard fight that he has no heart which Hagler has and that is why he lost that fight. And Hearns was just way out of his league.

From my understanding, Duran was always a bit intimidated by Hearns, so that may have been a factor. Also, styles do make fights, and Duran knew what to do with Hagler when he fought him.

Hearns has a decent chin, he does have great power and is a great finisher once he realizes he has you hurt accurate and aggressive. Duran has a decent chin, he is relentless aggressive, brings the fight has tremendous stamina and heart. Hagler has a great chin, he is relentless aggressive, brings the fight has tremendous stamina and heart. Duran got rocked by Hearns because of his chin, he played the aggressive role with the wrong man. He fought a great fight against Hagler because he wasn't trying to be that aggressive. The reason Hagler knocked out Hearns is because Hagler's chin is made of steel and he constantly brought the fight to Hearns, wore him down and eventually Hagler's bombs starting to take affect and knocked him out. Hearns is accurate as I have already pointed that out, he landed pin point bombs on both Hagler and Duran but was only able to rock Duran because of his natural smaller size and not so great chin. Hearns fights similar to Duran it is why they went the full 15 rounds, I just know Hagler is better at it!

Hagler took mutlitple bombs from Hearns and countered just about every time with a bomb of his own. It really hurt Hearns and it was something Duran just wasn't able to do. Had Duran been able to take the shots and get in position for a counter, taken Hearns into the late rounds he may have stunned Hearns himself.

duran thought that hearns would be an easy fight, so didn't take him seriously

hearns, just before the hagler fight, had his legs massaged so went into the fight on rubbery legs, which is why he went after hagler like gangbusters from the start, 'cause he knew his legs wouldn't hold out for a long fight.

other considerations when it comes to fighters who all fight each other is styles, motivation, preparation (physical & mental).

if you're just getting into boxing, then you are off to an excellent start with duran, hagler leonard & hearns....4 legends who thrilled us all!

good luck.

Hagler fought cautiously against Duran, choosing to box early and i thought he gave Duran too much respect and didn't really go after him until very late in the fight, plus Marvin didn't have the height and reach advantage over Duran like Hearns did. Hearns reach and jab made it very difficult for the 5'7" Duran to get inside on Tommy.

By contrast, Hagler fought Hearns the way Duran should've fought him, getting low, getting inside, and taking the fight right too Tommy. Marvin knew he couldn't afford to lay back and let Tommy use that height and reach advantage so he went right after him. Plus Hagler has one of the best chins in history and he took Tommy's right hand bombs and kept coming. Duran stood too upright against Hearns with his chin in the air, and Hearns caught him in the perfect spot right on the button.

To sum it up, Duran fought the wrong fight against Hearns, Hagler did not. Plus, Duran looked much more motivated for Hagler than he did with Hearns. Roberto just looked over matched and listless from the beginning of the fight with Hearns, like he really wasn't into it. Plus the fact that Hagler wasn't known to be a one-punch knockout fighter like Hearns was, Marvin wore opponents down with his strength and tenacity. Hearns was probably one of the most feared punchers in boxing history.

That's a very good question that you posted and I'm glad to see more young people interested in boxing. Hope this helps you understand it a little more.

It's hard to give a definitive answer to this question because so many things play into it.

Duran lost to Hearns at 154, and Hearns had only been beaten once by that time by Sugar Ray Leonard. Before losing that fight, people were whispering that Hearns was the second coming of Sugar Ray Robinson. Crippling power in both hands, freakish reach, a master boxer, and blazing hand speed. If not for Sugar Ray Leonard, they'd had crowned him alongside Ray Robinson. That was at 147 though, and after he lost he went up to 154, where he still had great power and the reach of a light heavyweight. When Duran came into this fight he had all kinds of problems with management and it looked to me like he was intimidated by this freakish specimen in front of him. He just had no idea how to get inside those long arms and really never got going, his seasoning as a fighter never showed through because he got nailed and that was it.

Duran did well against Hagler because he was in shape, Hagler was overrated as a boxer, and Duran knew better than to go toe to toe with a man that size. Hearns, on the other hand, before his fight with Hagler was in his hotel room getting his legs massaged, according to Emanuel Steward. If you've ever gotten a good massage you know it takes the starch out of your muscles and you are sore the next few days. Hearns went into the ring with Hagler with no legs, and in the first round before Hagler ever hits him you can see Hearns' legs locking up on him, then buckling, then locking up. He had nothing in his legs at all. He couldn't run, so when Hagler crowded him all he could do was go toe to toe. Hagler was naturally a much bigger man, stronger, and with a concrete jaw. Hearns threw everything at him, broke his hand on Hagler's head, and at the end of 3 rounds he was exhausted and kept getting nailed. That was it.

You'll also notice that every big name fighter Hagler fought was a man smaller than he was: Duran, Mugabe, Hearns, and Leonard. He never had the guts to fight a bigger, stronger guy...he always wanted to be the bigger and tougher guy in there. Hearns and Duran, on the other hand, weren't scared to fight bigger and stronger guys, to challenge themselves and put themselves at a disadvantage. Hagler avoided that like the plague.

Duran was one of the toughest mo-fos that ever lived, but Thomas Hearn's cross was so good that it plastered Duran. And Hagler took the same punch, but was even tougher than Duran as he was only hurt rather than knocked senseless. But when Hearns nailed Hagler, he broke his hand. No more sizzling crosses came from Hearns that night and Hagler took over.

How to explain it? Thomas Hearn's right cross was a powerful punch all the way up to light heavy, but Hagler had a heavyweight's chin. Nothing at all to do with style and had everything to do with Hagler's superhuman ability to take unbelievable punches. I consider Hearn's cross to be the greatest single punch ever. It's one thing for a heavyweight to score one-punch KOs, but a welterweight scoring 1 punch KO's against world class opposition? That NEVER happend before or since "The Hitman".

Duran was way past his prime and way out of his weight class when he fought those guys. Duran also has a history of blowing up and not training properly for fights in his later career. He probably trained a lot harder for Hagler.

BECAUSE HEARNS is a knock out artist and haggler wears you down then finish you off. The amount of punches Hearns deliver Duran could not deal with. Haggler systematically wore down his opponent with an unrelenting attack. Hearns has the home run power on an instantaneous , explosive level. Give me the shot at hag not hearns.
