you took a plate of food to share to a gathering and there is food left after the event and you want to take the plate/container home?

Ask if anyone would like to take the remaining food home -- get a couple of paper plates (one for the bottom and one for the top) and you've got a container to go.

It's also a good idea to put your name on the bottom of any containers and on serving spoons just in case.

I am gathering by this question that you are inquiring as to how to take your same plate you brought over to the party back home with you.

You could leave it there, and just ask the hostess of the party, if you could swing by the next day and fetch it, since you didn't want to disrupt the party. At that point she might just say, "oh, let me go and wash it for you now, so you can take it with you."

You can also just ask if the left over food could be transfered to another dish, so you could take your plate home (especially if you don't live in the area).

The protocol is to offer the remaining food to the host or hostess. If they decline, then you simply ask if you may take the remaining food home with you. If they offer to put it in a disposable container for you, tell them you will transfer the food yourself. If they do not offer a container, you simply take the remaining food in the dish you brought it in. The whole idea of bringing food to a gathering is to share your dish with others. In essence, it is a gift to your hostess. You never assume you can take the remaining food back, but usually, the hostess wants the leftover taken home by the person that brought it.

Ask the host if they don't mind for you to take it home. Most people who have a gathering like this are already overwhelmed with too much left over food and it may go to waste and your container could be mislaid in the process.

I would offer to wash the dishes before I left, making it easier to get home with your container. It's also a good idea to put a name tag on the dish so there won't be any mix-ups. You might also consider taking your food in disposable containers (foil/plastic with lids) that way you won't have to worry about getting your dishes back. Good Luck.

ask your host or hostess to transfer the food left on your plate, or offer to put the food left in a container while she is clearing up after the party.

If you took the plate, it's understood that you would take it with you when you leave.

Generally, I will ask if anyone wants anymore before I take it home, but I don't leave it.

Ask if anyone wants to take the food home, if not, just take it with the food.

Ask the host if he/she would like the remaining portion that's left. If the host says no, ask a few guests the same question. If no one wants the left overs, wrap up your dish and take it home.
