Do not do this. You will have your records so screwed up nobody will ever get them straight. Your brother's birth information is attached to his SSN as is yours to your SSN. Children now days get a SSN through the hospital when they are born and the Social Security Administration has a copy of their birth certificates (not in every case, but in most). The purpose of a SSN is so your employer can report your earnings to the IRS/SSA so you can earn quarters of coverage for social security benefits. It's not to be used for identification or for credit purposes. The best way to reestablish your credit is to start small in reestablishing it. Modestly use your credit cards, make the payment ON TIME if not early and don't be mixing and mingling finances.

Your brother's SSN isn't really his to give. It belongs to the US Government. He can't get a new number for himself either. You will just need to be more careful in the future. By the way, if you're applying for credit, tell the lender about your sister. One way to start rebuilding it is to take out a small loan and repay it in about 3 months.

Honestly that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Sooooooo many people go to jail for crap like that. Please don't be another headache for the department of corrections. Because that is who you would be dealing with when you get out of prison. I know, I worked with corrections and am currently getting my degree in criminal justice. Do yourself the favor and work on fixing your credit. You can fix things on your credit, if you can prove that it wasn't your problem to begin with. If not then your problem is with your sister and you need to either take it up with her or take her to court. Sorry for your luck, I hope things get better for you.

If you use your name it won't get approved because the name and SSN don't match. If you use his name you have just commited identity theft and fraud.
Even if they "give" you permission.

That's fraud, a crime. Feel like a little jail time? If so, go for it.
