It a horrible and brutal process which should be outlawed. It stems from old traditions, some believe it was to take the enjoyment out of sex for women, so they could just reproduce. Other societies believe it would deter them from looking for men other than their husbands, but for whatever reason, it should be stopped. Many of the nations where this practice is known, have actually outlawed it, but sadly, there is no way of inforcing it for these small and often very poor communities.

Female Genital Mutilation is horrible, and can cause an extreme amount of pain. It is often done using dirty tin metal, in filthy conditions. The woman is then physically in agony for weeks, sometimes months, and the mental scars never heal.. The worst thing of all, is it is often the mother, or grandmother of the woman, who perform this duty, and have themselves undergone the mutilation.

All I can say is it must be so ingrained into their tradition that they continue to do this, All we can try and do is educate people and show them how much harm it can actually do.

It is viewed as a type of a penis. Which is technically true, as it is the exact same tissue. It is called corpus spongiosum and it is "inflated" with blood when the female is aroused, just like the male penis is. Anyway, the thought is that removing this piece of tissue makes them a full woman. It is impossible to generalize what the girls think about this, but I would imagine many accept the teachings of the culture they were born into and accept their fate. Note that this is not widespread in third world countries by any means, the only people I have heard of are certain obscure tribes in Africa.

Not all third-world countries practices female circumcision or mutilation. This is widely and mainly practiced in African countries, from Senegal in West Africa, to Somalia in the East Coast, as well as in Egypt in the north and Tanzania in the south. Also some parts of the Middle East, particularly northern Saudi Arabia, Southern Jordan and Iraq, Syria, western Iran and southern Turkey.
Well, how girls think about it in these countries, I don't know. One thing I know for sure, female clits are mutilated to remove sexual pleasure to women.

It's a horrendous practice in cultures that believe genital mutilation will somehow control women's sexuality, and that females should not be able to feel pleasure during sex.

It's absolutely barbaric. Heinous in every sense.

Over 96% of all women in Egypt cannot have an orgasm, thanks to men and cultural rites that devalue women. In some parts of Africa the surgery is even worse, performed with cut glass or rusty instruments and involving sewing and destroying the labia, and a buildup of scar tissue that can kill women during childbirth.

Just another horrible way that women in the third world (Well, Africa and some parts of the Middle East) are placed at a disadvantage due to men, society, and "traditions" that people claim preserve the structure of the family. Bastards.

Female genital mutilation, aka "female circumcision" is performed in some predominantly Islamic nations and other areas with the reasoning that with their clitorises and labias women will not be able to enjoy sex and therefore they will be more likely to be submissive to their husbands like a good woman should be according to these people and less likely to stray or be "uppity". It is a horrific practice. It's a dangerous one in that not only is it a painful maiming but it will also leave the girl or woman vulnerable to all sorts of infections, many of them fatal. In short it's barbaric and it's stupid. It's done for a completely stupid reason. I mean, gee, Gods forbid that women should enjoy sex or be "uppity". We just CAN'T have that.

Sorry but I have no respect for cultures who continue to treat women as less than third-class citizens even in this day and age.

Third-world countries do this because those countries are Muslim, and -- while not something specifically endorsed by Islamic doctrine -- it is a standing Muslim custom in many Islamic countries.

The existence of such primitive and malicious beliefs are not (as one poster suggested) the result of 'patriarchy', but of Islamic patriarchy. Islam teaches that women are inferior to men, subject to men, etc. It only follows that men should be allowed to do whatever they want to women if women are to be subjugated by men (as the Koran teaches). In the Muslim mind in many parts of the world, this barbaric practice deters the woman from committing adultery -- which, they feel, they have every right to do.

the are old traditional barbaric rituals. some are being done to curb the aids problesm in 3rd world countires. the theory is if you take pleasure out of sexual encounter then sex wont occur then no aids. Again its an old barbaric custom showing how some ancient civilizations felt about females. This is mutaliation. This is a VERY RARE occurance. There has been a lot done to minimize this pratice.

They do this for 2 reasons:

1. They believe women should not get enjoyment out of sex because it is meant for childbearing.

2. If they don't get enjoyment from sex they will be more likely to be faithful sexually.

This is a horrible and disgusting practice.

This is one of the most brutal events a girl can experience. I think that any religion, which does this in the name of God, is by its existence, false or phony . Female circumcism is horrendous - oftentimes performed on a young girl with a rusty and dirty razor blade with no freezing !!! .... OUCH !!!
