So my problem is that my whole backyard is infested with ticks. Before, my father took care of this, but now he's gone, my mom's raising two kids, a house, bills, and bad habits of her own that she has to take care of.
Today, I found that one of my dogs was COVERED, and I mean there was no fur where they a were, in ticks! On her ears and the top of her head, especially.
Well, I talked to my mother, and all she did was stress out and asked to let her go in the night. Please be considerate; she's a simple woman and Asian. There were many stray dogs when she was a child.
Anywho, I didn't want to do anything so rash like to just let her loose. So I said that I wanted to take her to the humane society, and then she brought up that we might get into trouble with animal abuse.
The ticks has never gotten this bad before. And I've tried Frontline, and it doesn't really work.
Could I take it to the humane society and say I found her?
It's horrible, but my mom won't do anything else.

Just bring in the dog and say you found it. Don't just let it go like your Mom said.
Good luck.

OK, this is not as bad as you think and can be taken care of fairly inexpensively and then you can keep the dog!
First, Ticks like to live in dark, damp, tight areas. Look around your back yard for low hanging branches, lawn, and other debris. Remove this stuff and trim up any branches until they are 6 inches off the ground. Then, treat your back yard with basically any pesticide, especially under trees, bushes, and shrubs. I prefer products with Deltametharin in them. However, there are other similar products that are also inexpensive. The best products would be something that you spread out then water in. You can usually get a bag for under $15. (The same price as a tube of Frontline.)
The next thing that you need to do is remove the ticks from the dog. This will take some time, but can be done. I usually use a flea comb and tweezers.
I have had to do this for one of my brother's dogs in the past. I walked him through treating his yard, and I removed the ticks. Within about 2 weeks, there were no more ticks in the yard, or on the dog.
Good luck!

I think you make a honorable choice to part with the dog if you don't have the means to care for it properly. Yes, you can take it to the humane society and say you just found it. If you can help the dog long enough to post an ad in the local flyer (Usually free) then maybe you can find someone on your own. You won't have to wonder if the dog got put to sleep b/c a good home was unavailable.JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON"T LET THE DOG SUFFER in the mean time. You don't want your household faced with animal cruelty charges! Best of luck

The most humane thing you could do is take the dog to the Humane Society if you can't afford to take care of him/her properly. It sounds as though that is the best thing for the dog and your family at this point. The only way that you would be charged with neglect is if they can prove that you left the dog outside on purpose knowing it would be be infected with ticks. That dog needs medical attention ASAP if it is in as bad as shape as you describe.

Sorry to hear about your dog, especially if you are close.
Yes, the humane society, or RSPCA, or any dog shelters should take her. Unfortunatly all she needs is a good bath and good treatment.
Your other option is ask a vet or someone if they can help you look after her. You aren't abusing the dog, just this situation has got a little out of control.
Good Luck.

1. I would get some kind of spray to treat the ticks. You should not lie. I would call the vet and explain what you just stated in your post. Vet's are very caring professionals. They could work out some kind of payment plan for treatment.
If you contact the humane society you should be honest. It is not fair to do this to the dog. Once you give up all rights to the animal they can treat it. After my mom died we had to give alway her cats. Everyone was very kind and understanding.
Good luck.

I really don't think the Humane Society is going to blame your mom for this. All you really have to do is explain the situation and they will be happy to help. Sometimes things get too overwhelming for a dog caretaker, and the very best thing to do is get the dog help somewhere else. This is not an unusual situation, and one they probably deal with all the time.

Explain to the shelter that you want the dog to be cared for, but that you can't do it right now. Do not worry about getting in trouble, since you are telling the truth and trying to do the right thing. Please do NOT let the dog loose. She does not know how to survive on her own, plus the ticks will continue to get worse. I feel very sad for you and your dog. Take her to the humane society so that she will have a chance to be in a home that can care for her.

I wouldn't lie to the humane society. Ask for the vets help! I would do that, they could probably come up with something. I love dogs like a lot! If I were you, I wouldn't just let it go in the night. I hope this helps =]

That is the nicest thing that you can do for your dog. Just take the dog to the humane society and tell them that you found him/her like this. I am very sorry to hear that you have to give your dog up, but you are doing the right thing. I guess having a pet is not something that you can do right now.
Good luck and best wishes.

i say you should give her a bath, and buy some flea powder and put a little bit all over her body .. or just tell your mother that the dog is suffereing, and if you dont do anything now the ticks will take over and they are very harmful if there are so many! so you better be quick maybe even sneak off and tell the humane society. they wont think its abuse trust me
hope that helps:)
