The medication is most likely safe, as long as it has been stored in a dark, dry place, away from extreme heat and direct sunlight. Heat and light are what break down the components in most prescription meds.

Tramadol for a stubbed toe? That sounds a little bit extreme as tramadol is a very strong potent pain killer and very addictive. 1 Year old tramadol will be no good, it wont do anything for your pain at all... if it was say 2-3 months old it propabbly would but after 1 year its lost all of its pain killing ability!

Is it an actual expiration date? Or just the "discard after (date one year after prescription is filled)"
If the date is one year after the prescription was filled, that's pretty meaningless. Those pills may have come from bottle that expired in 2008 sometime. They just put the 1 year guideline on there so that people don't hoard pills for 10+ years.
After awhile, the quality of the pills degrades, but you're talking years. 6 months after the actual expiration date isn't going to make much difference.

Yes, it will be fine to take this medication. Tramadol (Ultram) will be good for ur pain. In addition, elevate, ice, and rest for a bit. Get better soon.

I wouldn't, medicine loses it's potency over time and some old meds can even become very dangerous. The chemical make-up of the medicine can change and make you very sick.
That's why there are expiration dates on the bottles.
Elevate your foot, put some ice on your toe, and take some motrin for any swelling.

the medication will still be good. Go ahead and take it to help with the pain this evening. Place an ice pack on your toe for ten minutes. This will help take down the inflammation And pain.
