Normal ducks have two legs. Lame ducks have one leg. Sitting ducks have no legs. There are 24 ducks with a total of 23 legs. If the total number of normal and lame ducks is twice that of sitting ducks, how many lame ducks are there?

9 lame ducks

Also 7 normal ducks and 8 sitting ducks.

Total ducks = 9 + 7 + 8 = 24

Total legs = (7 x 2) + (9 x 1) + (8 x 0) = 14 + 9 + 0 = 23

normal ducks + lame ducks = 7 + 9 = 16 = 2 x 8 = 2 x sitting ducks

N = Normal , L = Lame, S = Sitting

Total number of N and L is twice the S

equation: N+L = 2S ; when N+L+S = 24 --> N+L = 24-S
24-S=2S
-S-2S= -24S
S= 8 means N+L = 16

Total number of legs is

equation 2N + L = 23 ; where N+L = 16 --> N= 16-L

2(16-L)+L =23
32-2L+L =23
-L = -9
L = 9
so total number of lame ducks is 9
