Ok I want to graph lenght vs period in a line graph but I don't know the x and y coordinates. Where should I write my numbers?

Your question isn't as clear as it should be, but I think that I know what you want: You have something that grows (or shrinks) over time, and you measure the length periodically. So, your lengths are your Y values, and the periods (dates or just numbers) are your X values. So, set up a spreadsheet like the following:

Period Length
1 5
2 7
3 10

and so on. Now, select the labels and the data. Click the Chart Wizard icon on the toolbar or choose Insert Chart. Now, choose an XY Scatter chart and then pick the type that you want. Follow the rest of the prompts and that will create your chart.

If you work with the "chart wizard" you will see changes taking place and can easily change them.

Select the data - headers and data.
click Insert
click Chart
the wizard will display
just spend a little time here and run some trial and error
