My mother has extreme headaches. They just came on about 10 weeks ago. They're very severe, she gets dizzy, and sometimes her one eye feels strange.

She's had an MRI and there was a little "something" on, what I think the doctor called, the Pond's Lobe? She had a CT scan, which showed that the mark on the MRI was just a mistake from the machine. She went to an ear-nose-throat specialist, and he said there was nothing wrong with her.

They're so bad that sometimes she has to hold onto someone or something, or feels as if she's going to fall. Got an appointment with the neurologist, but she can't get in until November. I don't think she can wait that long...
Took some Imitrex tonight, and said it gave her pain in her ribcage/arms.

She's 45, if it makes any difference. Please help!

I would suggest going to another physician/neurologist and getting another opinion or demanding that another MRI be done. I have never heard of a "mistake" from a machine. Maybe a mistake in the reading of the scan - but that is an excellent reason to get a 2nd opionion.
Also take inventory of what or anything that has changed in her life in the last 10 weeks? Anything new, different, etc?
I know that there is a condition that causes something similar when the seasons change, but it is usually in the spring not the fall. However, sounds very similar. It happened to me one spring and it was scary. I also have trouble with my sinuses in the fall and that causes some strange things to happen.
Best of luck - I will say a prayer for you both.

Oh Sarah, you care for your mom so much and what a sweet question to ask for help. Can the imitrex get her through until she sees the neurologist. I use to have terrible pain on the side of my face, like it was being ripped off. I wish I knew what to tell you, I hope you get some answers that will make a difference. My answer is just to encourage you to hang on.

She should go to the emergency room if she is in that much pain. If she has insurance it should not be an issue to get in. Then she will get the attention that she should have already gotten, I am surprised that the doctor did not think it urgent enough to go to the er. If she chooses not to go, she should keep going to different doctors to get second and third opinions. i have been misdiagnosed before and it is more common then people think. Doctors seem to not want to admit when they have no clue what is wrong with one of their patents. I don't know if its an ego thing or if they a afraid of being sued.. Hang in there and don't give up when they cant give you an answer.

there are lots of different kinds of headaches -- imitrex isn't that good for most severe ones.

do you know if she has pain in the back of her neck? i suffer from cluster headaches-- they usually come about the same time every day and they hurt behind the eye on one side. occassionally they will switch sides but you seldom get both sides. it usually hurts unbearably for about 2 hours and goes away. the side the headache is on usually goes numb just before it starts and stays numb after -- you get kind of a droopy eye on that side too.

i learned to control them with life changes -- drinking more water, eating better, sleeping better.

there are lots of headache support groups online -- here are a few --

here are a couple pages on clusters --

http://www.ouch-us.org/index.shtml

if you think it might be clusters i can give you more information on what helps me -- feel free to email me.

most doctors are worthless -- i wouldn't bother with a neurologist.

Sometimes when you can't get in to see a specialist, getting admitted through an emergency room is your quickest option. You are obviously worried about her. ER's are a pain, but it's always better to error on the side of caution. Either you will find out she is fine, or you will get her the treatment she needs right away. Either way, it's your quickest way in to a specialist.

I would be taking her to the emergency room.

Hopefully they will be able to arrange for an examination by a neurologist on the spot.

This sounds like it needs a speedy responce.

Good luck!

A lot of times if you tell the doctor how serious the symptoms are they'll try to get you an appointment ASAP. If not, I would try another doctor until I got one to see her sooner. Good Luck!
