my friend runs cross country, and last year she was in great shape. she had great muscle tone and she wasnt at al fat, but she had a healthy amount of fat on her. over the summer she lost a lot of weight, i mean a lot. she started cross country up again, so i thought she would eat more and gain the weight back, but she hasnt. im pretty sure she doesnt have an eating disorder. but she said she has missed her period for 3 months now, and her doctor said it was fine cuz she is an athlete. is this right? it seems wrong to miss your period, i understand it lightening up, but she hasnt had a drop.

is this normal?

she is about 5'9 and probably weighs close to 110 pounds.

waaaaaaaaaay too skinny...she looks unhealthy

please help me out

very much so and especially for those that have extremely low body fat. I've dated girls that didn't have a period at all for many years in a row. it's perfectly normal for female athletes.

no, missing mroe than 2 periods in a row is one part of the medical diagnosis for anorexia. the NY Times had a good article (What Being Varsity-Fit Masks an Eating Disorder) last year about the high occurrence of disordered eating among runners. One quote: "In 2003, the National Collegiate Athletics Association surveyed over 2,800 coaches about disordered eating, and found that only 19 percent of men and 26 percent of women were aware of the seriousness of amenorrhea, defined as menstrual dysfunction for three or more months."

I'm not sure how old she is and if she had an irregular cycle already, but I'd keep a careful eye out for her. When I was younger, I had a problem with starving myself (no more than 500 calories a day) and my period went away for more than 5 months. Amenorrhea is generally a warning sign of anorexia.

According to healthguide.org, a red flag is "in females, missing three consecutive menstrual periods." Even if she's not anorexic, she's definitely underweight and needs to gain some to keep her body (and cycle) functioning properly.

It is normal for athlete's to skip periods, or miss them completely. Some athletes don't really ever get them at all. The doctor is right. However the fact that she lost so much weight is also a factor. If she is unhealthily skinny, this should be looked into.

well whats the question? if you are talking about her missing her period for three months, then its normal if its her 1st/2nd year, because your period is abnormal then, plus being an athlete does have an effect on ur period, so its not too abnormal

and if she is 5'9 and weighs 110 pounds then im fat, because im 5'61/2 and i weigh about 120 i think your friend is just trying to look good, my advice would be to talk to her about it, and make sure that it isn't something more then simply not gaining weight because she does cross country

you actual might desire to pass see a doctor. I went seventy 8 days devoid of era and had to settle for drugs to get it began and with a bit of luck get it lower back to being nicely-known lower back. it particularly is attainable to be pregnant and for it to no longer ensue on an HPT, yet the two way... no era for 3 months desires to be regarded at by utilising a medical expert.
