Hell, like heaven and other concepts, has evolved through church history.

Because mainly prior to that, there wasn't much written description regarding Hell. Even in the bible, only vague ideas about it were written. That is why many contend that the idea of Hell was borrowed from Greek, Norse mythology

It was a concept started by the Church and popularised by Dante. In his inferno, he clearly stated the strcuture and the tortures that the condemned underwent. It was later supported by the Church Fathers, who used the description to put fear into their flock

My friend it is human nature to say what they think will interest others to be listeners. I perceive that Dante did just that and thus gained popularity. However I do not see in my view that he did portray hell as the Bible portrays it.

In the Bible I see a lot said about hell all centered on the fact that the benefits of desire satisfactions are not there. One desires water but water is sourced in God and those there rejected God so they rejected the water benefit of God. I see air to breath is a benefit of Hod but those who reject God also reject this desired benefit of being satisfied.

If you want to understand hell think of all your desires and see yourself without them being satisfied. That to me is hell/
