A few weeks ago (maybe about two or three or so) I was bench pressing with free weights when I felt a strain in the middle of my back. Soon after, a big lump formed back there, so I knew it was a pulled muscle. The pain went away after a short time, but the lump is still there even though it's much smaller. Is it risky to start working out again or okay since there's no pain?

In general, 6 weeks is about the lengh of time to expect to heal, but everyone is different. I pulled a muscle in my midback about a month ago. Either pulled it or strained it, but either way, it's still sore. I waited a few weeks, like you, until the pain went away, and as soon as it did, I thought I was ok until I started lifting weights again and strained the same muscle. I have since learned that I can lift weights, but not as much as I was lifting, but if I do too much, or move the wrong way, the muscle will pull again. I'm thinking it's going to be a recurring injury for myself, and you'll probably have the same issue.

Until it is healed, about six weeks. If you over exercise it again too soon (for it, not for your psyche) it could become a chronic problem. Chronic, as in, doesn't want to go away.
