How does the next of kin go about protecting the assets of her incarcerated son? Is there such a thing as a power of attorney or conservatorship for this circumstance. She is afraid the son's new girlfriend is going to spend all his money and disappear with the property from his apartment.

As long as he has not been declared incompetent, he can issue a power of attorney. The fact he is in prison instead of a mental hospital leads me to believe he has not been declared incompetent. With or without the POA, the girlfriend can't legally access HIS money.
