I need to do crime scene photography and have been looking at the Bogen / Manfrotto 3021BPRO. I need to be able to invert the column to photograph footprints. Any suggestions???

Invert the center column.

If I recall correctly, the 3021 Pro has the kind of center column that can be mounted both vertically, and then can also be adapted to horizontal shooting.

My suggestion would be to open the legs as wide as possible, which will bring the tripod very low to the ground, and switch the center column to horizontal shooting. Just make sure to choose a tripod head capable of supporting the weight of your camera and lens.

If you're shooting in the daylight just kneel down and take your photos. Or just zoom in on the footprints from a standing position. If you're shooting at night get a ring flash (just like the ones you see on all the TV crime scene investigation shows), kneel down and take your photos. Much easier than using a tripod.

Now if you ever want to take available light night photos then you've chosen an excellent tripod.
