Well, this may sound rude or mean, but I don't mean it to. It is just the fact of the way the majority people are.
Because the vast majority of voters expect someone who believes, at least in God and a Higher Power, for guidance throught the thick and thin of being a president. They believe without this guidance in one's life, a president simply can not be effective in all the ways he/she would be required to be.
People who are atheist have difficulty identifying with the God-knowing individuals they must perchance to be mingling with any given day or time. This is because they do not know God. They seem to have little care or conscience about offending the religious believers, and would never be trusted by the relgious believers to be able to lead this country through hard times. They might be suspected of wanting to further secularize America in a bad way.
An atheist would also seem to have great difficulty in identifying with people from other nations who also are religiously affiliated. I realize that atheists have the right to be atheists, and they love, care and can sympathize with others just the same as all human beings, but they do not know God and therefore do not understand how it really makes them less whole in spirit and soul - how it is self evident to the God knowing believers - they can tell. An atheist president can not identify with the majority people and they can not identify with the atheist.
In no way is this meant to be judgmental or rude, but it is the fact of the reason why they would never be elected president. I'm sorry that's hard, but it is true; and it would be almost as hard for a woman to be elected for much the same type of reasons: people expect a president to be able to identify with them and to be able to be respected by other world leaders. This is a challenge, and it is a fact. That is the way it is in today's times.
The nation needs to be unified under a president; they need one they can believe in... and they won't vote for someone they don't identify with especially in such a profound area as their spirituality or non-spirituality.

A very good question, one that can not be answered easily. the separation between church and state is impossible. and why is this? its because if you believe in what is good and what is bad based on the bible or the church those are your views. so a person in power will do his job based upon what he believes is correct and what is wrong. (clearly bush is a Satanist) and the reason an atheist is much less likely to become president is clear. while a mayor could be elected in a highly atheist town one could not in a highly catholic area. and since, the vast majority believes in some higher power people will less likely vote for one who does not share their views.

How large to examine an clever question for a transformation. If we seem at Jesus and the Bible, we would desire to continuously settle for somewhat some what's declared, is the two myth or fact.the different "F" observe that's -faith.For in spite of reason or no longer those activities exceeded off ,we are being asked to comprehend Order quite than ailment. To be a Christian shows formality and correctness.Admirable and neccessary. To be an Atheist remains to have faith, yet no longer completely till shown.besides the undeniable fact that many atheists do no longer comply with civility and courtesy.a high quality that's predicted with elected officers. in my opinion it would not difficulty me.however the yank government for sure does evaluate it valid.

If you want actual answers I would eliminate the religion is an insult thing. I would also eliminate the uneducated closeminded thing. I would also compare Jesus to Mithra and Horus more than Zeus/Apollo.

If a presidential candidate did not believe that Jesus actually existed, then we would certainly have a problem. Atheist or not, he would be opposing peer-reviewed, secular scholarship on the subject. Isn't that sort of anti-science what we want to avoid in the first place?

In this country the majority decides who goes into office. It just so happens that people who believe in some sort of God are the majority. Coincidence I think not.

a leader should have hope
without GOD thier is simply no hope...
fact...JESUS need not have wrote a word HIS RESURECTION from the Dead was way more than all that was needed, HE ROSE anyway without any need of us But HE promised to take us with HIM
Pontious Pilate hung an innocent MAN; who would put that in writing?(umm..... today i hung a MAN who did nothing wrong) resume destroyer? yeah, i'd think so
that church and state be seperate is a provision in the constitution
"...that congress shall have no power..."
that does not, not even in the slightest mean one little bitty bit,
that other (i.e. local municipality's)could not establish or ban...
seperation of church and state is a mere play on words by some idiot somewhere out there who thinks removing GOD from a GODLY nation is a good thing...

Primarily because the Christian majority wouldn't vote for him. The constitution separates church and STATE, not church and VOTER.
