Hi...
I'm so excited to read a question that actually has some food value.
Green beans are delicious in many ways, but you didn't ask for a recipe...you just wanted to know how to cook fresh beans.
Take a pot large enough to hold a steamer or steamer basket. Put 1 inch of water in the pot, then add your basket with your washed and cleaned beans.
If you like you can take the tips off n both end and also cut them in bite size pieces.
Now put a lid over the steamer and boil them until the are to your liking.
Next comes a most important job....take the cooked beans out of your steamer and right away dunk them in ice water.
This keeps your beans nice green and appetizing.
Once they are shocked...and cooled you can use whatever recipe you love...your beans will look green and not what you usually get...grey.
I hope this helped...bon appetite.

I make Green Bean soup that my German grandmother use to make. I use a couple pounds of fresh green beans, and a good size ham hock. I boil the ham hock in a water with garlic, while I'm cleaning and trimming the green beans. I let the ham hock cook at least 45 minutes or so then throw in the green beans, cook them till bout halfway done then throw in a potatoes or two. I add chicken bouillon for flavor and a couple of squirts of soy sauce. Add a couple of turns of fresh cracked black pepper. And I use Tabasco to spice it up It is totally aw some!

There are two great ways to cook fresh green beans. The first way I do it is to saute bacon until some of the fat is rendered. Then I add sliced onion and saute it until translucent. I then put the green beans in a pot with the onions and bacon and add water to cover. Cook until tender crisp. The bacon and onion will flavor it. Drain, add butter, salt and pepper and enjoy!

The next way is to steam the green beans until tender-crisp. Then saute them in oil with onion and garlic. Very good that way too.

Cut off the edges and blanch the for about 10 seconds.

Then throw them in the frying pan and saute with a little garlic and butter. Adding other veggies too may be nice, mushrooms, onions, carrot strips, etc.

And eat with white rice.

I generally steam them until they are crisp tender. While they are steaming, I saute chopped pepper bacon with onion. When the beans are finished, I toss them with the bacon and onion, add a little kosher salt and serve! You can also dress them with a little butter and lemon zest for a refreshing side dish.

I noticed that they are not cooled in the store but are displayed in bins. I noticed that they become black quickly when they are refrigerated so I am not refrigerating mine now. I usually try to use them in 1 or 2 days.
