It's very rude, and offensive to God. If you do not go to church to hear God's Word, why go there? To put in an appearance? That won't get you to heaven, just keeping a pew bench warm for an hour or so. If I were pastor at that church, I believe I would ask those people if they find my sermon, boring, that they feel the need to read the newspaper during worship service.

It is rude and disrespectful to the pastor, and to God. Obviously the people doing that are only going to church for show, not because they came to worship God or learn something. I would probably tell them that there's only 52 weeks of 20 minute sermons a year, and that's only about 17 hours a year of hearing about the Lord. That's a pittance compared to the number of years the Lord gave them on the earth to live. The least they can do is be thankful for the life they've been given by paying attention to what the Lord has to say for 20 minutes.

It is just as bad. Rude even. You should come to church to learn about God, everything else can wait for an hour or two while you give God praise and learn more about ways to increase and strengthen your faith. Things like this bother me as well, would you do this in a meeting with your boss or in the middle of a friends wedding???

Maybe your perception was wrong, this person may have been doing a number of different things, perhaps he was deaf, perhaps the newspaper was actually a church bulletin, who knows? The important thing is: While you were watching this person, and passing judgment on them, what teaching did you miss out on?

your grammar is terrible;
'disterbing'
'worser'
'text massage'
anyway, answer to your question: How would you react to a person who takes out a newspaper and starts reading it in the middle of the sermon?
I'd ask for the sports section and quietly read.

I don't think god ever drop kicked anyone for not listening to the sermon. I've seen quite a few sleep through many a sermon. lol Some sermons will put you to sleep.

lol - that would be almost as bad as the time I first preached in a black church and heard an Amen! I didn't know how to react. :-) Now I am experienced enough that I would probably ask him by name what the headline was. :-)

He probably had a reason. My guess is that he did not care for the content of the sermon. And judging from most of the sermons I have heard, he is probably right.

It is a very rude gesture toward the minister and the Lord. Why be there if you're not paying attention? Attendance alone doesn't make you closer to God.

I think the newspaper is worse. Texting is a lot more discreet. You at least shouldn't make it obvious that you don't want to pay attention.
