This law is not petty in any way. It is at once practical and symbolic.

On the practical side, think about the different shrinkage rates and wearability of the differing threads used: linen(cotton) and wool. They shrink and wear out at different rates! A woolen garment with linen threads mixed into it will warp rather quickly, and become unwearable, within a season. Woolen garments are for COLD weather, and linen mixed into that will compromise the insulating properties. Linen garments are meant for dressier, summer wear, they draw moisture AWAY from the body, and reduce sweating. Mixing wool into this weave would COMPLETELY mess up the garment, and ruin it's properties.

Mixing threads is also symbolic of mixing trains of thought, cultures, religions, etc. Some things should not be mixed together (made into chimeras), even if they can complement each other well (be worn together as separate elements). Does the analogy make sense now?

Book, verse ???

If you read that in the Old Testament, and most likely if you read it at all, it came from the OT, it was a law given to the Jews, not anyone else, dear one. Not to worry.
