Hi,

I have an 8 month old Black Lab/ Terrier Mix. He's 40lbs and in great shape. Last night around 7pm he had an explosive diareahha event. We thought nothing of it as his mood didn't change. Nothing else for that night, but this morning he woke up at (6am) and was lethargic. Slow going, but still active. He went potty and had a softer than normal movement. By the time I went to work (8am) he was more lethargic than when he woke up. I went to work and rushed home at Noon to check on him. By this time I almost had to force him to get out of his crate. We went potty and (normal stool) there was a 2in peice of plastic that looked like a coffee stirrer in his stool. I mean I have never seen him this slow paced, he's usually a non-stop little spark plug. I stayed home after that, called the Vet. He said to fast him for 24hrs and limit water. Now 9pm and he pretty much won't move. I need suggestions. He is not sensative to the touch anywhere, belly is soft, nose wet, paws normal. Thanks!

OMG, get him to a different vet asap- our dog was a victim to the tainted food recall, we had to put her down Feb 16 and learned of the recall on March 20- our dog began with similar symptoms, she began slowing down, weak, off balance, she then began to spot (urine) sluggish, tounge hanging out a bit, and shaking- then progressed to neurological symptoms with neck twitching. When we tried to pick her up she yelped, her belly was sensative. The end result was brain damage, and they had no official diagnosis. There are still recalls, and beneful is one that should be recalled but not- check his food, save all packages of food and collect this stool for the vet to check out (the stool with the plastic in it) have the urine checked and if need be a blood test. If the urine is high in any levels, DEMAND they flush him with IV over night to rid the toxins, even if it is not the food, the he must have gotten into or eaten something toxic.
Please do not delay, you don't want to go through what we went through- many hugs- just have him taken in asap!!!!!!!

oh that happened with my Lab x Husky, i was told the same thing to fast him and keep hes fluids up, the hardest thing was making him drink.. i sought a second opinion and they said he had a little virus. They kept him on a drip for 6 hours i took him home and he was sweet the next day. I never keep to one opinion if he deteriorates at all after the first one.
Good luck hope all is well.

I would be worried about an intestinal puncture from the coffee stirrer or whatever it is, but of coarse, it could be a virus.

If he is drinking water normally, he is probably fine.
