I've been researching online and havent come up with any strong details. I visited the ANA website and found some information, but would love to hear from a RN currently in the field.

Im interested primarily in Labor and Delivery, pre natal and postpartum.

Im currently a preschool teacher and love child development.

Call the local community colleges in your area and ask if they have a RN program. If they do, ask them to send out information materials including admissions criteria, or go there and meet with their advisors to have them walk you through the process.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket - contact many schools and apply to more than one, because nursing school entrance is competative, and many people have trouble getting in right away.

You'll probably have to take some pre-reqs before applying - such as general biology, chemistry, and anatomy & physiology. You also will need to become a Certified Nursing Assistant - so you'll need to ask where you can complete that course, too. But every school is different in their requirements.

If you already hold a bachelor's degree, call some 4-year universities and ask if they have an "accelerated BSN program", where you can earn your nursing degree in less time since you already have enough liberal arts/gen ed courses under your belt.

Get admitted to a school that has RN classes. Many universities and community colleges do.

Complete the degree.

Take and pass the state test to become an RN.

Many of the community colleges in California operate on a lottery system. First get your perquisites done. The classes you need are usually posted on their website. After those are completed, put in your application in all the schools that you are willing to move near or commute to and you hope that your name is drawn. Some community colleges and most universities in the state operate on a point system. You get more points and increase your chances of admission if you get a high GPA, and work as a CNA or EMT. Some offer points for being a resident of the area or learning a foreign language or for having a history of working with a diverse population. The universities require more classes to apply, but you won't be waiting for your name to be drawn.

Write to the California State Board of Nursing for that information, or do a search online.
