what are some of the causes of police brutality?

I think they are many and varied. For the most part in the US and the UK, we have a reasonably good police force. There are some bad uns among them - just like any other trade or profession.

As for why some of the brutlity occurs......

Insufficient training - and weeding out of unsuitable recruits.

Extreme frustration on the job - Seeing someone who BADLY assaulted someone walk out on a technicality - and then have them tell you they will be doing it again. Policemen are only human - they are not perfect emotionless automatons.

People who join the force to "wield power" rather than serve the community. Not too many of them, but there are a few power hungry people who need counselling more than they need to wear a police uniform. Often these people lack the skills needs to become an officer of the law and become a traffic warden instead ;) :) :)

Knee-jerk reaction : I consider myself a decent and fair minded guy, but if someone deliberately harmed someone I cared about in front of me, I think I would put them on their **** if I could rather than "stick to PACE guidelines". I guess that would perhaps not quite be "brutality" but the word is very subjective I think.

There are times when extreme force is the only force that can be used to protect others around you. Remember in the UK, most of our police are not armed with firearms - so you sometimes have a choice of "talking them to death" or "using sufficient force to take command" - arguably if you point a gun at their head, they might just toe the line without any physical force being needed at all.

There's a few - I am sure others will add plenty more

Police brutality has existed a long time, my older brother was a police officer and there were times that the guy that they arrested was being such an idiot and running his mouth they force fed him waffles, I know that doesn't make sense and does not sound brutal.

Force feeding waffles is when the arrested person is handcuffed and placed in the back of the patrol car (no seat belt laws back then), the police officer would be driving down the road and suddenly slam on the brakes causing the person in the back seat to slam his face against the metal barrier between the front and rear seats. They would normally do this 3 or 4 times until the guys face looked like it was a waffle.

Cops see to much crap from to many lowlifes, sometimes they just get so fed up they snap. I don't blame them

There is and always has been 1 and only 1 cause of police brutality. That is brutal people becoming police officers. The solution is to get rid of the bad officers. The problem is not and never has been as widespread as the media likes to make it appear. It is also a problem that will never be totally eliminated. Much of what is CALLED brutality is not.

I wonder,
If police did not exist would you all be the 1st ones to whine and moan in the anarchy?

Yes it exists, but you also never get to hear the full story. Rodney King for example- He drove recklessly and very quickly through suburan areas endangering the lives of civilians and then attacked the police officers while high on drugs. The section of tape most people see is only the ending of a longer struggle.
Causes? Stress, Police are human after all and are falliable you cant weed it out or even really train against it, it happens.

You'll never understand the crap a cop has to put up with without experiencing it for yourself. This is one of the toughest jobs there is, and they literally put their lives on the line for people that will never appreciate it anyway. Sometimes they do get frustrated and go over the line, but other times people have it coming, you just didn't see or ehar the whole story. For example, there was a video circulated not that long ago of a cop slamming a guy into the hood of a car, what you didn't see was this guy took a swing at the cop first. That was conveniently edited out before posting.

Police brutality always existed. 30 years ago they used to beat the crap out of a smart mouth without worrying about being disciplined.

Now they are watched way more closely.

The cause is a person who tries to fight or disrespect the police....they need to be brutalized. If a person is that stupid...well...they need it.

At least now they use tasers and pepper spray instead of billy clubs. I'd never want to be a cop....I'd bring back the billy club.

Well, I have heard that one cause can be a predator response.

i.e. police officers chase someone (either on foot or driving)and when they catch them, the adrenaline causes a primitive reaction that causes a violent outburst of energy... which is probably directed at the person being chased (the prey)

***************************

Then you also have the fact that some polie officers were jerks BEFORE they got the badge and the badge now gives them an opportunity to continue being jerks.

**********************************

But I happened to know and deal with about a dozen officers (city police, county deputies & state troopers) and they are all really nice guys.

they claimed that poor wages and insufficient support caused alot of it to happen down in New Orleans back some time ago.

There's alot of issues that play into it. Is it acceptable? NO. But there are things that lead in and attributes and conditions that cause it to rise and happen more frequently.

A officers murder in the line of duty

Drugs and Alcohol

Stress and fatigue

a officer walks a fine line, sometimes too fine.

Your question should in fact and in reality be the other way round - Since when does police brutality NOT exist...Surely what! if you want to hear the answer you wish for...get the hell out of him!! especially if its one-sided and he's all tied up & helpless. Have you not heard of martyrs?! and how any police authority in any country (with NO exceptions torture their victims till they scream, yell and YIELD?) And, from another angle, one very good criteria to recruit a police is to get 'gangsters recruited'...why? you use a thief to catch a thief lo! So with ruffians in the police force surely they know how to administer brutality....Right? Weird but often times true!
