Chewing is not BAD dog behavior. It is NORMAL dog behavior and it is up to you to train the dog not to chew on what he shouldn't. Invest in a good crate to keep the dog contained when you cannot watch him, and then supply plenty of chew toys to keep him entertained. The dog will soon learn what is acceptable and what is not.

Depending on the age of the dog it could be a number of things.. Chewing is often a sign of "teething" in a puppy so it's important to have appropriate chew toys and things for it to chew on... If it's an older dog it could be anxiety driven. If you go away or introduce a new pet, baby etc... Just be sure to leave out appropriate chew toys for the dog.. Kong toys stuffed with peanut butter or KONG filling is very good.. Also, dogs/puppies chew because they are bored... There are also chew toys that dispense treats that's something for the dog to do.. I also would stuff a KONG toy with dog food or cold hot dogs and fill the end with peanut butter let the dog work with that for awhile to keep him/her occupied.. They LOVE that ! If they are chewing furniture get a "bitter apple" spray and spray it on things that they chew.. Table legs, shoes whatever.. They don't like the taste and will leave it alone... Good luck

Chewing IS a normal behavior for dogs when they are pups (teething and the desire to 'sample' everything around them as they explore).

However, chewing can turn into destructive behavior if the owner does not teach the dog what is acceptable and what is not acceptable to chew. It is more of the owner's problem for not redirecting the normal chewing behavior that all pups go through towards suitable objects while the dog is young. Especially when a pup is teething.

A puppy is going to chew. So don't look at it as bad behavior - look at it as normal behavior and accept that it is going to happen. Then begin by redirecting the pups attention away from objects that are unacceptable to chew towards objects that are acceptable to chew. Never allow a pup to chew objects such as old shoes - they can't differentiate between an old pair of worn out sneakers and a $300 pair of high-heels. Instead ensure that there are proper toys (nyla bones, kongs, etc....) that are made for dogs to chew on and encourage them to chew and play with only those objects as well.

Bottom line: Redirect your puppy away from 'your stuff' and towards his toys. A pup is going to chew no matter what you do - show and teach him/her what is acceptable to chew on. Make it fun and a puppy will respond.
