Hydrogen peroxide works by oxidizing the hair to fade it - no sunlight needed.

Straight Hydrogen peroxide, might lift one level of hair colour. But in order to lighten it more than 1 level, you need to mix Hydrogen peroxide with powder bleach. It works quicker under heat and kept moist. Since I am a Hairstylist, I would recommend getting this done only by a professional.
