If your dog likes it and is doing well on it, I would say keep feeding it to her. My dalmation loved it when my daughter was an infant and we dog owners must do what we have to in order to feed our dogs within our budget. Purnia Dog Chow, Predigree, and Beneful are other possibilities that I've heard good things about. I never had a probelm with Aplo but I'd switch to a better food when you can afford but in the meantime it should be fine.

I homecook my dogs food as I believe the supposed "healthy" brands are mostly just good at marketing and ripping people off. If I had to choose a grocery brand, it would be a Purina brand like Alpo. Iams tests on animals, Pedigree turned all my dogs' poop black. If I had to choose, I'd say Alpo or Mighty dog are good choices. Purina also makes a Beneful wet food that has actual real food in it. Its more expensive than Alpo, but less expensive than the supposed high end brands. Do your best for your dog and don't feel bad for not being able to buy the expensive stuff. Lots of people can't, some of the higher end brands cost more than human food! Before I homecooked I only fed Alpo and purina dog chow and my dogs lived into their teens.

Alpo is not that great, I prefer Pedigree or Purina Dog Chow.
I also add a little of the canned pedigree to their dry food....You should be able to get a 40 pound bag of Pedigree or a 50 pound bag of Purina Dog Chow for less than $18.00 a bag.
Figure the cost of what 40 or 50 pounds of Alpo would cost compared to the other two, you might find out it is only a few dollars more and you will have larger bags of a better dog food.

If you absolutely MUST feed your dog food from the grocery store, choose Purina One. It's NOT a good food, not even close, and I would NEVER feed that crap to my pets, but all of the foods sold in the grocery stores are bad...this would rank only a little higher than others in the store. I HATE myself for even suggesting this to you, but do so only so you get your dog off the Alpo.

I dint know much about Alpo. I have 6 dogs and they are all on Iams. My dogs had an allergic reaction to what was in the food. They broke out in bumps and had ear infections all the time. So I changed there food which only contains chicken and veggie's. Since the change in food about 2 months, there skin has cleared up and ear infections are gone. And you will never believe what I changed too. Beneful..... I saw it in Wal-mart and thought what cheep food, but it turns out, it was the best for them. 1pit,1bulldog,1boxer,1shih-tzu,2 teacup chich...
I think this goes to show, the more expensive it is, does not mean that its the best all the time.

You should at least up grade to Purina one. Which is not great food either, but its bette then ALPO. Take the rest of the ALPO and mix a little in with the Purina One you are going to buy.
Also go shop at walmart.

Alpo is not the best food in the world, but you do what you can do, and I'll bet she'll be fine for a few years on Alpo.

You are asking if it is good food? No it isn't good, but you answered your own question by saying you can't afford anything better.
You need to either make peace with the fact that you aren't feeding your dog the best food, or find a way to buy better food. At least you are feeding your dog, which is a lot better than some people.

Like you said, you already know it's not a good quality food. A lot of people buy Pedigree from the grocery store. Whatever brand you choose, get the dry food. It is better for their teeth. The wet stuff causes tooth decay. Good luck to you

the only cheaper brand food I have trusted at all is pedigree.
We lost our dog to the recalled food, one month prior to the recall- she had no official diagnosis until we found out about the recall. I have little trust in any dog food now, but have been giving our new pup who is now 7 months old Wellness- and prior to that Pedigree and I mix the wellness dry with some predigree and I add just a little water to it and mix it up.
we have now changed the moist to wellness canned with the wellness dry.
