My husband and I have a 4 or so month old male pittbull. We've had him since he was able to be taken from mama. Been having a hard time getting him to let us know he has to go potty. We've tried everything. He only lets us know SOMETIMES and he pees in his kennel and lays in it. Can someone help me figure out how to get him to go potty outside?

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the answers. All things I've tried. Including reducing the size of the kennel. He could not turn around in that thing. We had no accidents at all yesterday!!! It is hard to take him out every 45 minutes seeing that I work. I do take him out first thing in the morning, before I leave for work, lunch hour, home from work and a few times between. Maybe he is finally getting it!!!! Again thank ya'll so very much. Very helpful!

when you take him outside to potty always take him to the same spot. Also when he does go potty out side Praise him and give him a treat and of course when he goes inside scold him.

Some dogs take a little longer to "get" things. I know my female pitbull took close to being age 10 months to be potty trained. EVEN though she was kenneled. She still urinated in her cage. It wasn't until I moved into a place with linoleum floors throughout and didn't kennel her that she toned it down. My male pitbull was about 4 months old when he could hold it all night. So, each dog is unique, however, as a rule of thumb:

At 4 months your dog should be taken out every few hours, perhaps you're not providing enough outside time? Not frequent enough?
Of course, you need to praise and praise when he goes outside. That way he eventually connects treats and praise with "potty outside". Also try giving him a code word, like "Go potty" or "potty" or "outside" that reminds him it's time to go potty outside, or commands him to go potty outside. I know I tell my dogs to go potty or go poop all the time, and it seems to refresh their memories.

Since puppies go a lot, you should let him/her go to the backyard every 2 or 3 hours. Leave the dog outside for about 45 minutes. Make sure your gate is locked and it can't escape. Keep doing this and soon they will get so used to peeing outside that they will call you to bring them out. I also suggest using training pads, they have a special scent to attract the dogs. You can get them at your local pet store. I like to put these in my dogs kennel when she is in there. Good luck!

Take the puppy to the same spot and say a certain phrase each time to go to the bathroom. You may want to make his crate/kennel smaller too. My puppy did this until I made her crate/kennel so small that she can go in, turn around and go to sleep. She has NO room to go potty and then try to move away and wind up laying in it.

You need to take him out more. Don't expect him to let you know when he needs to go out - that comes after he's fully house trained.

Take him outside when he first wakes up, after he eats, before bed, and about every hour in between. Praise, praise, praise when he goes outside! Once he's no longer having accidents, you can begin gradually lengthening the time between trips out.

Most pitties cannot control thier bladder until at least six months of age. Maybe a little after that but not much more time like a couple of weeks.

dont leave him feed at will, put food out at exactly the same time every day, and once he is done eating take him outside. to the same spot! same with the water, i know they say you should have water all the time, but until he learns to go outside to do his business, this should work! good lucK!
