Well, since you are stating the obvious and being beligerant about it - Christmas was designated by the Catholic Church, the only one at the time and being the Mass where the birth of Christ was celebrated. Gifts were given 12 days later when the wise men and others supposedly arrived. The date chosen was to wipe out the Roman (yes pagan) holiday at the same time and was done intentionally.
The shifting of the gift giving to Christmas Eve (in some cultures) or Christmas Day (in others) is fairly recent - 150-170 years old.
So what is your point - people change.

If you don't know the day Jesus was born, what's wrong with -picking- a day? I mean here in the US we celebrate the birthdays of our two most famous presidents on a day when neither of them was born? What's the difference, really?
There's a lot more early Christianity borrowed from paganism than just a celebration of the Winter Solstice!

'Christmas' isn't a Pagan holiday. It's a Christian holiday held at the same time as a Pagan holiday, using many of the same symbols and customs, and invented to convert Pagans. There's a slight difference.

The Jesus Mysteries is a good book and it has a ton of examples of the similarities of Christianity and Pagan holidays.

Ok that CJ guy made me mad, satanic and pagan are not the same thing!
And you're right it is a pagan holiday that outdates christianity, the holiday is Yule, the winter equinox.
I am atheist and I celebrate yule because it is just a celebration of the seasons, any xians who fight this are just plain brainwashed.

It is Saturnalia, which is a satanic pagan "holiday". Jesus was more likely born in a totally different time of year. But the unsaved catholics are the ones that want everyone observing their pagan rituals.

Christmas is in reality "Mithras" and it is mentioned in the Bible as an ungodly observance:
Rev 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

I thought that the true meaning of the four months of Xmas was for retailers to make "50% of their annual profit". What is this word "Christ" you speak of in Xmas? I thought it had been thoroughly removed.
