My fiancee will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy next year, and we're a bit confused if she'll be using her current last name or my last name once we're married. I always thought that in the military, any female personnel uses her maiden name, even if married. She thinks that she'll be using my name. Anyone know?

Which name she uses is her choice. I've known women who have gone ahead, changed their name and did all the paperwork involved. I've known others who preferred to keep their maiden name. One had already been in 10 years and was known by her maiden name and had an excellent reputation in her career field.... for her, it was easier to keep it and to not have to reestablish herself with her married name. Another kept her maiden name just to keep folks from confusing her and hubby.
It's all a personal choice. No one can dictate that.

She can change her name, it is actually quite simple...I have been married and then divorced in the military (changing my name both times) You just provide the documents and fill out some paperwork...wait for the memo that says your name is changed and **poof** you have a new name.

She can also choose not to change it at all, it's really up to you...I dunno what "regulation" HOLLYWOOD is reading...but he is wrong, there are plenty of people married in the military who keep their maiden name...no one can MAKE YOU change YOUR name.

Just as a side note...I would advise against a hyphenated name (in case you were considering that) it's just a pain in the ***

Let her do whatever she wants. I'm getting married next month, and have been in the military previously using my maiden name. I hear it's a big pain to change it, so I may just wait until I'm out to change it to my husbands name.

Military regulations require that if hes is married no matter whether boot camp or the Naval Academy she will have to use her married last name that is required for insurance and any other thing that is connected with the military so once she is married she has to change to her married last name that is regulations.

She can use whichever she desires. For her to change her last name, she only has to submit a Personnel Action Request along with a certified copy of her marriage license.

She can choose ..if she wants to take your last name, she can. If she prefers to keep her maiden name, she can do that. She can even hyphenate if she likes! Congrats.
