Ideally, they need to be at least 13 weeks old. By this time, they've learnt the biggest part of well-adapted, social behavior from their mom and littermates.
It varies per kitten though, some aren't even ready to leave then, and still very much need their mom for comfort a couple of weeks longer.
Here in Holland, giving kittens away under age 8 weeks is against the law, but cat associations set a rule for their members that kittens shouldn't leave under 13 weeks of age.
They have good reasons for that, one of the most important being that cats that are separated from their mother too early often develop behavioral problems.

Many kittens we have had in to our rescue are not fully weaned at 6 weeks old so this is much too young.
I wouldn't recommend letting them go until they are at least 10 weeks old, preferably 12.

they can go as early as 6 weeks if they are not pedigree cats however you need to make sure they are weaned and know how to use a cat litter tray.
if they are pedigree ones then its 8 weeks onwards.
i myself wont let any kittens go until at least 8 weeks as this way they can have their jabs before they go and make sure I have wormed them too. they should also be quite happy to eat and drink and use the litter tray just like mommy so their shouldnt be any problems for the new owner.

You need to worm them at least twice, and take them for their vaccines at 7-8 weeks. Then they can go to new homes.
SPAY the mother so there are no more kittens!!!!!
