Does anyone else think that if someone comes on and says that they think you are wrong or in a cult or just insults, should say what faith they are?

I personall don't want the info to insult them back, but to get a better understanding of how I might intrepret what they say.

I think it would be fair, but highly unlikely. it's part of that liberating anonymity that is so available behind a keyboard. People can just fling insults without fear of repercussions, because they don't accept email or IM.....

I've noticed that- people who are really mean in what they say have eliminated any way to get clarification about what they've said, or try to re-explain your own point of view.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to want some one to tell you what faith they are, especially in the Religion & Spirituality forum, where it's extremely pertinent.

I don't see any way of enforcing standards of behavior regarding this, however. Probably all you can do is either ask up front for people to identify their religion (or whatever they call their belief system) when you initially ask a question; or email a respondent (if they permit) and ask them. Or you can look at the person's profile/Q&A, which may give you some indication.

I am a Christian. I don't know what religion you are, so I can't give you my opinion on it; but a very good website is CARM, which is the Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry. This site explains basic Christian beliefs and some deviations from them (such as Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormonism).

Do a search on this guy: Ergon Caner. He is a former Muslim-turned Christian. He is often called to debates. I like his advice for this kind of question: If you are so sure about your information about the religion or faith that you believe in, do some in-depth research about other religions. This isn't so that you can return the insult; it's so that you can see where they are coming from. Rather than throwing insults that might boomerang on you, question the person's belief. Find out why they believe that way. Find out what kind of personal experience they've had. In that way, you will have the person thinking that they are giving you convincing information when you might actually find a "hole" in their argument.

i think no matter what you believe there is always going to be someone out there that thinks their belief is right and better then yours. i don't think anyone should claim to know the truth because life is about finding the truth. we can't say we know the truth till we die. i think we should respect those who have different ideas then us because we may just not understand. even if you don't agree if you believe in any type of good and truth at all then you should be respectful about others beliefs and try to find common ground because all religions have things in common.

I don't think he is under any obligation to say what faith he is, and neither are you. Strictly speaking, his faith is irrelevant to what he's saying about your faith. What he says should stand or fall on its own: Either it's true or it's false; either he can back up what he's saying or he can't. By the same token, your defense of your faith stands or falls on its own, regardless of what faith his is.

He has the right to choose whether or not to subject his faith to your scrutiny or criticism. Who knows, maybe his refusal is due to his inability to defend it. But still, his faith and yours are two separate subjects.

Ignore insults.
Cult has different meanings,
In Jesus' time he was thought to be a cult leader.
If they think you wrong, that is their opinion.
Religion is a very difficult subject.

I give a rats a** what others think. The more I travel through life, the more screwed up I find other people to be.

Obviously they have much different views than you.
You think you're right, they don't.
How much more do you really need to know?
