Treat them as human beings sure but they are in prison for a reason...why should they be pitied?

They are fulfilling their duty as followers of Christ. Some say that such a venture is a waste of time, and maybe so. But never-the-less, that way nobody can say they weren't given a chance to hear God's word because no-one cared about them. It's not about pity. Besides, sometimes someone has to hit rock bottom before they're ready to admit they need any kind of help- religious or otherwise. Human nature, you know?

The term imprisoned, in Scripture, more often than not means imprisoned in or by sin.

but Christians are the hateful ones huh?

Because forgiveness, compassion, and caring come with the calling my friend....and we believe God can save even the person you have no pity for.
