bought the new "all in one" Vaio computer and I know it comes with windows vista (which i wasn't too happy about I'll admit, i heard it sucks)

is it possible to install windows XP or something like that over it if it came with vista as a defualt?

And can I still install my favorite computer games that were made before vista came out?

Additional Details

also, reading some other peoples questions on vista and the answers are starting to scare the **** out of me.....

i can move all my documents and stuff into the new computer right?

I'm also worried about my games, i love gaming (i don't install too many, like 2 at a time and uninstall when i'm done, not to mention i don't have much time anymore anyways)

Can anyone say ANYTHING good about vista? Or did i just waste money?

If it came with Vista, and you do not have the CD, you would not be able to reinstall if you decide to go back. I am just starting with Vista on my laptop. I have it set for "classic view" which makes it resemble XP. Makes life easier for me. As for using older games and programs, literature I have read says that some programs may not work. Here are a couple of articles you might find interesting.

Make Older Programs Run in this Version of Windows (Vista)

Most programs written for Windows XP also work in this version of Windows, but some older programs might run poorly or not at all. If a program written for an earlier version of Windows doesn't run correctly, use the Program Compatibility Wizard to change the compatibility settings for the program. To change settings for a program manually, use the individual program's Compatibility tab.
If changing the settings does not fix the problem, go to the program manufacturer's website to see if there is an update for the program.

Caution: Do not use the Program Compatibility Wizard on older antivirus programs, disk utilities, or other system programs because it might cause data loss or create a security risk.

Run the Program Compatibility Wizard

1. Open the Program Compatibility Wizard by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Use an older program with this version of Windows.
2. Follow the instructions in the wizard.

If you cannot install a program, insert the installation disc for the program and, using the wizard, browse to the program's setup file, usually called Setup.exe, Install.exe, or something similar. The wizard is not designed to work on programs that have an .msi file name extension.
To change compatibility settings manually for a program, right-click the icon for the program, click Properties, and then click the Compatibility tab.

Go to the source link for more information.

Yes you can install XP - but - you must go to the website for your machine and find out exactly what drivers you need for that machine if you go to XP. Any that are not available from the computer vendor you must get from the manufacturer of the device. Could be touch pad, screen, drives etc.

Frankly if you are not a real techie then you probably should get one to do it for you.

Whether or not you can install the games on Vista is going to be found out by trying each one. Some will work some will not.

Documents and 'stuff' sure you can move it - and if they are Word and Excel etc they will work if you install a new Office package. Expensive at best. The good news is that there is a legal alternative - Open Office. 99.99% ccompatible with all Files from Office. You can get it for free or get a download from someone on EBay for a few bucks.

The reason people say Vista sucks is that it is different. I had to go to help just to figure out how to turn off the machine.

Everything is different and it is a pain but all change is always a pain.

I am beginning to get used to Vista - though I had to be drug into it kicking and screaming.

OK, you CAN install XP if you buy a copy, but you may not be able to get the drivers you need. As for the games, it all depends on what games they are. You can try the website for them and sometimes they have patches that will allow them to work on Vista. Yeah, it's not all that great, but there may be a Service Pack for Vista soon, and that might fix a few of the harder problems. You can transfer your documents, but Vista may prompt you a thousand times if what it's doing is OK. It's a lot like a nervous child - just keep telling it that it's doing fine and eventually it will do what you want.
If you don't have a lot of computer experience I wouldn't recomend installing XP without asking Sony if they have XP drivers for your machine. There's a way to get around it, but it takes some more advanced computer knowledge. Best of Luck!!

First, Vista is not too bad.

Most of your documents from XP can safely be used in Vista.

Your games should MOSTLY work as well.

If you want to install XP over your Vista installation, it can be done but you would have to boot from CD and either install over the Vista partition or onto a separate partition.

sure it could. Vista makes use of greater ram as nicely as greater modern hardware than an XP laptop might meaning that XP ought to additionally be faster on your pc than Vista may well be overall performance-smart. yet sure a downgrade in working device might make existence much less stressful to your pc. in case you like the two you're able to do a chop up with XP and Vista put in concurrently so whenever you go online to your pc you pick what working device you pick to apply.

Yes you can install Windows XP on your laptop. Remove Vista 1st either by reformating or deleting/creating partition on your hard drive.
I had a lot of customers who asked me to this coz they had problems with vista.
Also, see if you can ask the laptop seller if you can get XP at a discount price instead of paying full price at the shop.
