F=ma. Newtons classic LAW states that Force equals Mass tines Acceleration. What this translates to is that smaller burns less gas. Playing NHRA hot shot at every light will burn lots of gas.
My Toyota Matrix (basicaly a Corolla wagon)gets 32 MPG, and will carry two eight foot wingspan, 100 cc powered model airplanes. (the wings are removeable.)
The wife wont fit, but she's not interested anyway.

The lighter and smaller SUVs are good on gas in comparison to heavy SUVs that have large engine displacement.
Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4 are good on gas for SUVs but are thirsty compared to a midsize car.

Honda CRV... but it is a small SUV. If you are talking luxury SUV, then it would have to be Hybrid model. On average, you are looking at about 25 to 26mpg. I recently test drove GMC Acadia which is a full size cross-over vehicle that they claim gets up to 26mpg on hwy.....
