Why do all of the disgruntled, disheveled professors smoke cigarettes when we get out of class. Mostly the philosophy professors. Kind of random question.. but I notice it every day.

That's kind of a bias question, just because they smoke doesn't have to mean anything, why do teenagers smoke? Or doctor's? It's not anything related to one another, smoking is just smoking.

First, it is because they probably started smoking when they were young, and the nicotine in tobacco is very addicting for most people. I recently read that only one person in seven who tries to quit smoking is successful.

Secondly, my bias is that many philosophy professors have an anti-science bias and disdain evidence of the harmful effects of cigarettes. The phenomenon is not unique to them. In psychiatry it is called DENIAL.

That's the wrong thing to wonder; what you ought to be wondering is why you don't pay more attention in class, so that you too would more fully grasp the futility of life and start smoking your own self. Bah...
