My son could read sentences when he was 3 and was reading at a Grade 5 level in first grade. We sought the advice on a child psychologist who said that kids who are exposed to lots of learning opportunities at an early age -- like reading everynight - often read very early. She cautioned not to over react and have too much testing done because it is not very reliable under the age of 10. Instead we enrolled him in a bilingual program where he learns in both English and French and it seems to be challenging him enough to keep him interested.
He is coming 8 and still reads like crazy -- sometimes he can read things that he is not mature enough to handle. But in general he is doing well.

YOUR the parent, YOU know what's best for your child. If she wants to read at a higher level then let her. Go to the library and let her pick out books she's interested in reading. As far as the teacher goes, she should be ashamed. It seems to me she's being a lazy teacher. If your child has a "gift" then it should be nurtured, not impeded. Keep your kid ahead of the curb, it will payoff down the road. And talk to the principal about the teacher's attitude.

My 8 year old can read anything you put in front of him, and has been able to for 2 years at least. I haven't read _to_ him since he was three. Lord of the Rings, Alex Rider, Harry Potter are his favourites...and he can discuss the stories afterwards. The worst punishment I can give him is to take his books away.

Doesn't mean a thing, he's not a genius, he's not treated as if he's somehow different. He's a perfectly ordinary 8 year old who happens to be good at reading.

A lot of children can read above their grade level in the early grades, simply because the "curve" hasn't quite developed yet.

I say that it doesn't matter what level they can read at, you should just encourage them to continue reading! Also, just because your son or daughter can read at a grade 2 level, doesn't mean they understand it. I know a bunch of 4th graders that can read grade 8 books, but they come away with almost nothing.

Comprehension is just as important as recognition.

Our son was reading fluently at three and a half. At grade one, he was reading at the grade 5 and up level.
Glad to know your child is reading already!
