You need a doggy diaper if she is bleeding and messing up the house.
My girls are pretty clean, so they don't need them.

Not all dogs make even need a diaper, they don't all make a mess. It isn't like a human female's period. A human period is so messy because it occurs at the end of ovulation, when everything's being flushed out of the uterus. A female dog's heat occurs during ovulation, so there is nowhere near as much mess - the discharge is just overspill from an engorged uterus really.
Since you're a first time dog owner, I want to give you a head's up. Have your b itch spayed before she has her first heat. This will give her her best chance of avoiding mammary cancer when older - something 1 in 4 unspayed females get. It will also completely elimate the risk of pyometra, which 1 in 10 unspayed females get, as well as ovarian and cervical cancer.
Make an appointment today to have her spayed to ensure you two are together as long as possible.

I would suggest confining her to a kennel cab,or some place a male dog can't get to her.A doggy diaper will help you from having to clean up after her,as the heat cycle last about 4 weeks.

They do make doggie pads that you can buy. If you do not use them, she will leave spots on the furniture and floor. Some dogs, however, will tear them off. Your best bet for the comfort of the dog and yourself is to have her spayed.

I have medium and large size dogs. I use little girl underwear (size 8) in cute Disney prints for the med sized girls.. just cut a hole where the tail goes and apply a mini-pad at the appropriate spot. Size 6 women's panties work for the big girl... she doesn't get cute prints :-(
I've had girls who've been meticulous about keeping themselves clean... then I don't bother with the panties. I've also had girls who made my kitchen look like a slaughterhouse.

SPAY SPAY SPAY. Diapers will only help to stop her from bleeding on your stuff it definetly won't stop a male from getting her.
