Can anyone think of a scenario in the not-too-distant future where a foreign military power or an alliance of some kind could mount a successful invasion of the USA? What strategy would be used? Would nuclear weapons be a foregone conclusion, or would countries shy away from mutual destruction? If such a scenario exists, then how could the USA take action now to defend aganist such a scenario?

I would bet on a China-islamofascist alliance. first to go would be India, then Indonesia. Then they would have the money and manpower to do just about anything

Actual invasion of the continental US would be difficult, but not impossible. A necessary factor would be another Carter as US president

My scenario would be to ship several milion (perfectly feasible if you're not too choosy about conditions) troops to Mexico (first soften them up by massive drug gang wars) then simply walk over the border. Neutralises the nukes- as they would have to be used on US soil and an attack on the "home" states would bring retaliation- eg a chemical attack on a US city

IMO the scheme is doable within 10-20 years. Hope I'm wrong

Who knows who might attack the US in the future? Today's ally is tomorrow's enemy in my opinion - just look at how often Italy and Japan have changed sides over the years.

Most likely a conventional attack, because using nuclear weapons against the US would warrant a similar reaction. That and the resources of the US would probably need to be preserved for the conquerors.

And no, all the armed citizens and militia groups aren't going to hold out too well against conventional armies. That's the problem, everyone thinks all wars of the near future are going to be just like Iraq.

It will happen one day - all the dominant military powers and empires of the world inevitably fell or broke apart with time. Sparta, Persia, Rome, Germany, Britain... just keep investing in conventional defences in the meantime and be thankful it probably won't happen in our lifetimes.

I don't know which foreign military power or alliance will invade the USA. Alliances are formed based on common goals and policies, so it depends on what policies would be prevailing in the future.

But this one thing I know for sure. The invaders will surely be calling the ordinary American citizens with guns or those who resist the occupation as either terrorists or insurgents. The invaders will also claim that the invasion will be for our own good, and that the invaders are installing a government based on their own ideals of "freedom and democracy".

Well...

Everyone hates gun-toting rednecks however they do make a successful invasion/occupation of the continental US nearly impossible.

No I am not kidding. As if the US military isnt enough to deal with then you have the population of the US which is heavily armed and the majority of whom has been shooting firearms from a very young age.

Invasion of the US...bad idea.
