I'm currently renting here in Southern California but I would really want to purchase a home. I work as a nurse so, i earn enough to pay for the mortgage. It just so happen that my credit is really bad...around 500...I have several collections worth 200, 300 etc...I'm willing to pay these off...How many months do I need to wait for me to fix my credit score after I pay off my collections? Thank you.

You can get this cleaned up within a month. All you have to do is call the collection agency or even the original creditor and make payment arrangements. Tell them you will pay the balance in full if they could remove the negative reporting that appeared on your credit report. Do not give anyone your bank account number or your bank routing number. They will drain your bank account.

Ask them to fax you a letter stating that once the bill is paid in full that they will remove the negative report on your credit report.

My husband had the same situation. After several phone calls and tons of follow up and a lot of persistance, I got everything removed from his credit - EVERYTHING.

You have to be polite and persistent. Speak to a supervisor if you need to. Make sure to get it in writing before you pay. Explain your plan to buy a house. These people are human, too and they have to do a pretty crappy job. So butter them up without being a kiss a** and you will do it.

Good luck!

EDIT: Someone mentioned that you dispute all creditors and if they don't respond within 45 days than it will fall off your report. While this is true, if you know you owe the money, doing this is morally and ethically wrong.

Also, someone mentioned that you pay a credit repair agency. Most are scams, don't do it. The only one worth it is the consumer credit collection agency as one member mentioned, but even in this case, you will have to pay a fee for something you can do yourself for free and just a bit of your time.

Once you pay off the collections, it usually takes about a year for your credit to look better. Try disputing all the negative on your report, if the business doesnt respond within 45 days it will be taken off your report. Worth a try!! Also many in collections are willing to settle for a much lower payment.
When you do pay those collections it is still a negative on your credit but the business your applying for credit will look at it as a positive because you are atleast making an effort

Your local consumer credit counseling should help you.
www.cccs.com or www.cccs.org

They charge a fee. but the are the only ones probably with the bbb logo on their site you can check to see if they are legit.
www.bbb.org

I seen the commercials for www.ditech.com or www.di-tech.com giving out 5.99% interest rate for homes on apr approval. RATES MAY HAVE CHANGE.

7 years, unless you can get the creditors in writing to remove these negative things from you score upon payment in full.
