I plan to buy a highlander 4WD, but would like to know if it mean it is AWD ( like the CRV ) or seletable 2WD or 4X4?

It's AWD, full-time (Not selectable) without low-range.

AWD means that all four wheels are exerting power at the same time. AWD has its benefits of not having you to turn on the 4WD in case of emergency. 4WD will give you RWD performance and when you feel the need to have to go in the snow or something, you can turn it on. Personally, 4WD has its benefits for me, if you live in an area where unexpected weather happens very often, AWD is a better option.

4WD and AWD are not the same thing. AWD means all 4 wheels are getting power from the engine to move the car at all times.

4WD is when you can use all of the wheels to pull the car if you place the transfercase in 4WD (high/low) mode. Otherwise, when this is not done the car is running on 2WD.

Selectable...

Real AWD can be found in a Subaru, Audi, and the LandCruiser. (amongst others)

Landcruiser can have 3 selectable locking differentials above being AWD.

Know what you need and are getting!!!
