all these answers are great but I want to add that its not just about giving away what you dont need. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will move you to give away something you really DO NEED..or you really DO WANT. It takes no faith for me to give away clothes that I havent worn in months...but can you give someone your last $5? Can you give away stuff you actually LIKE? Im not saying that I do this on a regular basis..but I try to be sensitive to the Spirit. Sometimes your 'test' can be in the giving.
Good example...I went to pick up my daughter one day and a guy was walking by with his life possession packed on a bike with a raggedy dog tagging behind him. The Spirit said Bless Him..and I reached in my purse and thought I was giving him a $20. I called him over to the car and handed him the bill. He looked at me in shock and said thank you over and over again. Well maybe an hour later, I realized, I'd given him $50, not $20. Now Im not a wealthy person...$20 was alot for me but $50? I became stressed about it...thinking of all the stuff I could have gotten with that extra money. I actually started to get mad for blessing that man. Then I went to another store and saw a homeless woman sitting outside on the ground. My mind said 'dont give her jack..you lost money already'...and I ignored her and walked past. When I turned around, my 5 year old was standing over the lady and the WOMAN was giving my baby something. WHen she got in the car...she said 'the lady told me to give you this' and in her little hand was 7 pennies. At that moment, I realized I'd let the devil make me feel selfish. I gave my daughter $10 and told her to go give it to the lady and she did. When I drove past that woman she was standing up, her eyes closed..with her face lifted to the sky smiling. (praying I think) God made a point to me that day...Never let the fear that He wont provide, keep me from being a blessing to someone else...

Donate whatever you don't need. Food, clothes, shoes, toys, blankets, or even money. The list could go on and on but you get the picture. You can give to the local homeless shelters, local churches(as long as they accept donations, some don't because they don't have the personnel),goodwill, soup kitchens, and again the list could go on and on. Also donating time for Gods work is more valuable than material items. So get out there and help a fellow human being out. GOOD LUCK & GOD BLESS!!!

I make a monthly fast offering. We fast for two meals and donate the cost of the food as an offering that is used for those in need.
I volunteer to work in the Bishops' Storehouse to fill food orders.
We coordinate with other churches to prepare meals once a week.
We have projects like preparing hygene kits or quilts.

Donate food at the grocery store, at church and Feed the Children. Donate clothes to Goodwill, Purple Heart and VA.
In my city we have quite a few homeless people and the people always give them food and money. The churches find them apartments and try to find them jobs.

The poor in spirit are the legalists, the law vs law folk,
for law is as nothing compared to grace is as everything;
Law vs Law is as Loser vs Loser every way you look at it.
Feeding the poor would be spoonfeeding them grace,
till they get it: understanding = grace glory (Proverbs 4).
The put off: law (glory them)
The put on: grace (much more glory us)
Which things are an allegory & mystery to solve in time
lest all perish by law law instead of none perish by grace.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Give them what they need to be self-sufficient, like job training, affordable housing. Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime. That's feeding.

Donate your old clothes to Goodwill, donate food whener you can, i.e canned food drives, etc. In other words, help those less fortunate than you.

I actually take the person(s) to the store and get them what they need or, if I can't there is an org. I donate gift cards to and they see to it that the gift cards are redeemed properly.
