I put out cans and bottles out by my dumpster all the time.
Last night I took out a bag of food and left it by the dumpster and when I got up today.. it was gone. I put pancake batter, juice, veggies and a butter dish filled with coffee. kindness helps no matter if it is in money or just food.

I would buy him or her food. I would not give them money, no. I would be too afraid it would be spend on drugs or alchol, which is a huge problem the homeless population have (and in part may be the reason some of them are homeless), however, I would want to help them so I would buy them food.
Now that I think about it, if it was a person with a child who was searching for food then I would give them money.

I know of a man who lost his job, never told his family, every day he dresses for work, changes clothes on the train, begs in towns away from home, and makes more money than what he did when he had a job...most times one can see when people really need help, and one can also see who does not want to work.
I will give to someone who needs if and when i can.

I saw a family hunting through the garbage cans in my alley. I talked to them and found out they were trying to get enough cans to get some gas money. Brought back memories of my dad making us kids go to the dumps to get "treasures". So you bet I gave them money. They had a little girl who was the same age as my little girl, I felt so bad for her.

No but I might take them somewhere where they can get something to eat. A lot of times money given to homeless people gets spent on booze. It's a sad stereotype I know but in my experience it's been true more often than not.

One time I saw a woman and her son going through a dumpster, I was going to go into the store, buy what I went there for and IF they would have still been there. I was going to give them whatever I had left.. They were not there.

I left with the SHAME that I so deserved. We went from helping others to being the ones who were in need of others.

Always Remember what goes around comes around.

I deserved to suffer, but I drug my family into poverty with me.

i live downtown kansas city, mo. i see it every day/night. i may give them a dollar or something occasionally. but to be honest, most of the time those guys come up and ask if you have spare change or money, they always follow it with "so i can buy a cold beer", this might sound mean and rude, but im not going to give my money to a homeless person so they can go have a cold beer instead of buying something to eat.

this might also sound mean, but i dont feel sorry for them, they can find somewhere or someone that can help get them cleaned up and there are people out there that will help them with jobs, so half the time they are just lazy and dont want to try. i.e. asking me for money so they can have a beer

street people call that "dumpster diving" and it's been made illegal in many places. now the homeless can't even dig for food in the back of grocery stores anymore without risking incarceration.

and yeah ... i'll give hungry folks money. i eat everyday.

PS. look folks ... if someone is digging in the garbage for food they are HUNGRY so if you give them money it's a pretty good bet that they'll spend it on food. (not that i fault anyone for giving food too.)

PPS. right on, Debs!

I would give them food. If you give money they buy drugs or alcohol most of the time. I have gave food to people that ask for money for food every time. At least if you buy them food and give the food to them you know they are eating and not destroying themselves.

Skippy say, no I wouldnt. Giving people like that money for doing nothing is what keeps them dependent on others.
I would offer them a job like to mow my lawn or pick up trash. Then I would pay them for that. If they refused to do the work, skippy say screw em.
