Firstly I was told by someone that you need to be able to prove that you have enough money to support yourself for the year. Does anyone know how much money you need to have in your bank account for it to be considered enough to support yourself?

Secondly, after that year is up I know I will want to continue living there permanantly as I've been before and loved it. But I am not married to an Australian and am not what could be considered "highly skilled" so is there any other way?

First of all, that option is not open to Americans. When I came on a student visa, I thought that I would need to prove that I had the money. Turns out, the people with authority make generalizations based on where you live. So basically live in what's normally considered a wealthy country, you should be fine. But if you live in Ghana, good luck.
