A long time ago, Jenner discovered that workers that often contracted cowpox from cows were rather immune to the effects of smallpox. So, using a sample of weakened cowpox viruses, Jenner created the first vaccine against smallpox.

To expand on peteryoung's explanation, the word vaccine is derived from the Latin, vaccinius, "pertaining to the cow." Vacca = cow in Latin.

Edward Jenner discovered that those who get cowpox don`t get small pox. Jenner protected his son first as none else volunteered for cow pox vaccine.
