I was at one of my highschool's away soccer games in another town. At the game two of my friends and I were approached by the man in charge of the fields facilities, for throwing pebbles at the back of a shed/garage facility at the field. The man who saw us called the police and we were taken to the police station in the town. There were no damages to the shed but they still filed a police report. Now, a week and a half after the incident, my school's principal and assistant principal got a hold of the report. They called me and my friends to the office and told us that we were banned from any of the schools athletic events along with 3 detentions. I just wanted to know if the school has the power to do this, with something that hapened out of town and out of school? and do they have the power to tell me that i can't go to a field out of town? (I live in New Jersey)

Yes. After school activities are considered to be part of school and fall under the same rules and regulations as actual class time hours. Schools have the right to enforce all rules, even at events that take place at other schools. Your lucky your not suspended as some schools consider rock's to be weapons, and with throwing them, it could of been assualt, especially if you had accidently hit someone. Take your punishment, and next time consider what can happen to you, even if you are doing something in fun. Good Luck.

If it happened out of town, then the school really doesn't have a strong claim that you disrupted any school activities in your own town.
However, at this point, the courts are allowing schools to do just about anything they want. Case in point -- the Supreme Court recently ruled that it was acceptable for a school official to tear down a banner, held by an adult on a public street -- just because some school children were also in attendance at the event and might see it.

In a word...
Yes.
School events even out of town are considered to be an extension of school itself. The same standards and code of behavior still applies, and you can be sanctioned for breaking a rule the same way you would be sanctioned on campus.

this is SO dependant on so many things.
including local school precedent and even the current state of crime in your area.
you can take it to a lawyer, or even ask the ACLU if you can help.
But the truth is, schools are given a lot of power over students behavior. and much of it is not fair.

yes they have the power and yes they can do it. wait a little while and let things cool off. then go and talk with the principal and ask him to resend his punishment. more than likely they will drop it for a probationary period.
