Wow!Schizophrenics are hearing actual voices? Is that what you are suggesting in your post?OMG, you really need to learn about psychology and how the brain works. You will discover that we as humans have the ability to hear and see anything we can imagine. Our brains are like the ultimate reality simulation systems and can easily be made to alter our perceived reality just with a notion or wrong chemical balance. But I guess you are one of those folks that would rather return to drilling holes into peoples heads to release those pesky demons.

That is correct. I don't believe in the supernatural because there is no evidence for the supernatural.

In the case of schizophrenia, many sufferers experience audio hallucinations and some experience visual delusions. Schizophrenia is a problem with the function of the brain.

Does your question suggest that imagining bugs crawling under the skin by a person tortured by this disease should be taken as inclusions from the spirit world?

There is no way to justify the suffering of the mentally ill. If doctors are going to treat the symptoms of this disease, it can't be sugarcoated with ghost stories and "spirit" messages when these people are suffering.

Are you alright, here let be help you up, there you go, let me brush the dirt off your close, oh you got some leaves in your hair, here is this your JC baseball-cap, just take some deep breaths okay, do you want a drink of water, is this your stand of JC souvenir's, wow what a mess, let me wet one of these t-shirts, oh aren't they nice, JESUS IS LORD well that's profound, here this ones wet try and wipe the dried blood from you face. Wow you need to be more careful, I mean if your going to provoke Atheists, you really need to be a little more heady in your Q's. Now you've really got some good res ponces, and you should read the longer answers 2 or 3 times to get a handle on the intellectual meaning of those answers. Duck Phup is always a good read, and your longest answer really seems clinical and accurate. P.S. the voices you hear telling you God is real and his son JC is with you most of your day, that's really your own mind exposing a file that was planted by males mostly. It's really male foolery copied and changed then passed down through the centuries. Now you be careful in the future, and take it easy buddy.

Our consciousness is an emergent property arising from the complexity and dynamic connectivity of the neocortex of our entirely self-contained living brain. The cochlea of our inner ear is connected by the auditory nerve to Wernicke's area, which is part of the cortex of the left temporal lobe. Wernicke's area is responsible for the comprehension of spoken speech. This is where the nervous signals of the auditory nerve are converted into language we can hear and understand.

There are two malfunctions, one common and one rare, of Wernicke's area that cause a person to experience auditory hallucinations. Schizophrenia is thought to be caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters, chemicals which regulate the functioning of the neurons (nerve cells) of our brain. When the neurotransmitters are not properly balanced, when the inhibitors are insufficient, Wernicke's area creates the illusion of perceived speech and meaning, an auditory hallucination. Persons with severe schizophrenia often hear a more or less continuous background of murmering voices constantly "whispering" inappropriate suggestions. As a schizophrenic's condition deteriorates, selected voices rise to prominence and become more insistent. As time passes, it frequently becomes progressively more difficult to resist the inappropriate suggestions.

The more unusual malfunction of Wernicke's area is a type of temporal lobe seizure disorder, which causes a person to clearly but intermittently hear voices which are not actually there. This disorder is associated with traumatic head injury, particularly when the injury is above the left ear. When brain injuries heal, the "scar tissue" around the former wound frequently form a seizure focus and is often the cause of epileptic seizures, which are themselves highly variable, depending on the precise location of the injury. When the damage is to Wernicke's area, the resulting seizures result in auditory hallucinations that are usually loud and clear, but lack coherent consistent meaning. Many neurologists quietly believe that the Prophet Mohammad suffered from seizures of Wernicke's area, and that this is the legitimate origin of the Koran. The fact that Mohammad's revelations occurred at unpredictable intervals over a period of more than twenty years, combined with historical records of his behavior during those short events, strongly suggests that Mohammad had a seizure disorder, no doubt with the neuroelectric focus in Wernicke's area.

It is in fact NOT safe to assume that ALL Atheists do not believe in a spiritual realm, I for one DO believe in something akin to spirits, though it is more of the emotional energy released upon death, like how you get that weird feeling when you're at a funeral, or when you walk into a room and get a weird feeling. It's not the souls of the person or animal reaching to you, it's the emotional residue...and maybe some people can tap into it or something, who knows? That's what I think...and schizophrenia is a disease, it's not caused by demons.

In what universe is schizophrenia equate to demonic possession or ghosts???

No, as an atheist - I do NOT believe in the "spirit world" ... and schizophrenia is a mental disorder --

It is - and I quote: "schizophrenia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental illness characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality, most commonly manifesting as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions or disorganized speech and thinking in the context of significant social or occupational dysfunction"

There's no spirits... demons... of flying spaghetti monster involved in this disorder.

LOL. So... you are suggesting that schizophrenia is caused by demons?

Look... when you listen to music, or hear somebody talking to you, the idea that those sounds are entering your head is an ILLUSION. What is happening is that the sound waves are converted to electrical impulses, which are then processed by your brain. What you THINK you are HEARING is actually CONSTRUCTED by your brain. So... sometimes people's brains go a little bit wonky because of chemical imbalance, injury, lesions, abnormal tissue growth... and as a result, the brain can spontaneously CONSTRUCT the same kinds of patterns that it constructs when you are actually hearing things.... and these mis-firings of the brain are (mis)interpreted... BY the brain... as 'voices'.

Also... everybody has 'thoughts' in their head as a part of their normal, ongoing 'internal dialogue'. Sometimes, people are unable do distinguish these 'thoughts' as a normal thing... and they create the illusion that these normal 'thoughts' are the 'voice' of some 'entity', trying to tell them things, and tell them what to do.

"When you think you're talking to god... that's 'prayer'. When you think you hear god talking to you... that's 'DSM-IV 295.7'." ~ DuckPhup

However... if the medications aren't working... go to the graveyard at midnight, under a full moon, taking with you a pregnant female cat that's been dead for 3 days, 24 bat testicles strung into 2 necklaces (one for you and one for your cousin), ten cloves of garlic, and 5 candles (for the pentagram). Then...

Please do not confuse mental illness with spirituality.

Mental illness is a medical diagnosis which may or may not have treatment or cures. Any medical text will describe schizophrenia, its diagnosis and prognoses.

Spirituality something quite different. Biblical, God is spirit. Man is body, soul and spirit. We worship God in spirit and truth. Holy Spirit. "Jesus is Lord" is a spiritual statement not a physical or intellectual one.

Answer: The mentally ill can be spiritual, but the spiritual may not be mentally ill.

The voices are our own. As self aware beings we "hear" our own thoughts, and schizophrenia is when that self awareness fragments. It can be cured with medication, proof that its a physical issue of whats actaully there rather than any divine will stuff (Ie, You can't cure schizophrenics by killing goats and shouting Praise Be.)

No, it's not save to assume someone who doesn't believe in your version of a god doesn't believe in anything spiritual. Atheists, however do not believe in things that have no evidence to support them, which would include spirits. Where do the voices come from, huh? How about they come from Thor.
