I work security in Las Vegas. Now for the last two days since I been on duty, there has been this homeless person walking past my site early in the morning. He often shouts (and acts very hostile and angry, but has not hurt any one, yet) "I love Jesus!" and "I hate ***gers and generally arguing with himself out loud.
This morning he went off verbally on me and walked off.
This guy to me is unpredictable. Should I count him harmless? Or should I arm myself with something in case he does goes off on some one? What should I do?

The other problem is I do not know the laws in Las Vegas Nevada concerning a security guard carrying pepper spray. I do not want to survive one attack and then face the law.

I however always figure some loophole out to keep my self safe.

I was a homeless schizophrenic for 3 years until a homeless medical clinic took care of me with medicine and helped me apply for SSDI.

Believe me, I've been around plenty of people just like him. You can't deal with insanity unprotected. Arm yourself with something to protect yourself and others. These people can get violent. Be prepared.

Maybe the police could take him to a shelter or psyche ward. He definitely needs medication and it's so difficult to help those who can't help themselves. Maybe he's a veteran in which case the VA hospital would take him in. Good luck!

I am in contact with individuals that act in that manner on an almost daily basis, just from working downtown Dallas.

They ARE unpredictable. Generally, they are harmless. However, if they are having a bad day, who knows. I don't think you need a weapon, but if they come up to you yelling, be prepared for anything I would say.

He clearly has problems and needs help. Is there not a charity for homeless people with mental health problems you could contact? Perhaps a missionary seeing as he shouts Biblical stuff. Please don't hurt him. He's hurt enough already and just needs help. You've taken the time to post on here so you have enough concern for him - even if it is because you worry he'll turn violent. The poor man may not know what's going on. Please help him!

i am a nursing student. I am currently doing clinicals at the homeless shelter. The majority of homeless people have mental health issues. If you feel unsafe, you may want to bring something to protect yourself. But, in my experience, most of them are harmless. They are simply lost in the world of their mind. Dont try to bring him back to reality through redirection. Just listen to him and try to change subjects if theyre uncomfortable. Then again, i dont live in las vegas...

the man might be suffering from a mental illness or delusions from alcoholism... could be any number of things.

if he doesn't bother you anymore, then just let him go along his merry way.

i don't know if there is help for people like this in your city (i imagine there might be). you could contact the police if the man gets abusive or physical with you...

unfortunately, many mentally ill people and alcoholics end up living in the streets because they don't fit in society and cant hold a job. sometimes medications can help them, however, they can't be forced to take meds.

take care of yourself.

He is probably harmless. Are you trained to defend yourself just in case? Maybe you could carry pepper spray.

If he is talking to himself he probably has a psychological disorder. So there is not telling, but before you arm yourself you might want to ask your employer about there polices. No need to loose you job.

Don't risk a concealed weapons charge. If you're going to arm up, get licensed.

Arm yourself, you always should be anyways, especially since you're in the security business....in Las Vegas.

A little bit of sarcasm: you should be armed...you never know what O.J. will do next.
